Google Keyword Dominance

Hi There,

I have made it to No.3 on Google for my main Keyword, with my overall goal being to get to No.1.

Is there anyway to test or assess the two websites currently ranking in No.1 and No.2 position to determine my chances of getting to No.1

If the two websites are doing everything possible, it could well be that I will never get to No.1, so I am just trying to determine how much of a stranglehold these two websites have on these positions.

Any advice or assistance would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Jake

From your description its quite clear that you are doing it right when SEO is concerned. So my advice would be to continue doing whatever you are doing now and you will notice further improvements in your keyword ranking.

And if you have time to spare, do a thorough competitors analysis to find the weak points of that top 2 websites and hit them through that hole. You will see improvements much faster.

Of course, if you are able to find some low competitive keywords then it would help you a lot, there is no doubt to it.

I would say that use Google Adwords keyword tool as it is most popular and it is accurate too.

Search each keyword in Google with "" to find competition and always go with less competing pages..

    I would say.

Traffic Travis is lousy, but free. It will give you an idea of how strong domains at positions #2 and #3 are, but it doesn't find most backlinks.

If you wanted to get a clear picture of the backlink profile of the two websites ahead of you, I would use one or more of the following tools: ahrefs.com, majesticseo.com, and Open Site Explorer (with this one being the weakest of the bunch- slow to index backlinks).

Check out their Domain Authority and yours. Try to increase your DA by getting relevant and high quality links. This will help you move upwards, at least to #2.

You can do competitive analysis to know your competitors in better way, you can check the backlinks and the quality of content and try to do the same so that you can be on the first position.

If you've made it to no.3, then you can make it to no.1. You can use a backlink analyser tool like Majestic SEO to analyse your competitor’s site and determine where their links are coming from, etc. Continue working on increasing your site’s traffic by creating great content to your website and frequently update. Build authority by getting backlinks from various authority sites – article directory submission, creating contextual links from web 2.0s and wiki (mix of do follow and no follow websites), social bookmarking, video creation, blog posts, press release, document sharing, etc. Also, build links slowly and keep building to maintain link velocity. Everything is possible with SEO, you just need to invest time and effort.

    Hi Jake,

#3 position is indeed a great achievement and from here you can focus your efforts on promoting your site as a niche authority, so that people can recognize your brand or service and click your very site regardless of competitors ranked higher.

However, if#1 position is your end goal, the first thing you should do is to research competitor backlinks and find out qualitative and quantitative characteristics of competitor’s backlink profiles. You can do competition analysis in WebMeUp since the tool reveals the exact number of competitor’ backlinks and identifies the sources where they come from. Plus in WebMeUp you can compare your site with those of your competitors by a number of factors: rankings, traffic, indexation, backlinks, social mentions etc., get data-rich visual representation (graphs, tables, diagrams) and track your performance over time side-by-side with your competitors.

As you explore how the completion looks like, you’ll be able to identify strengths and weaknesses of competitors’ backlink strategies and decide which techniques are worth allocating resources to in order to outrank your competition.
