How to Rank Someone Else's Website?

Hi Warriors,

I heard someone else (who's doing online marketing/consulting for offline businesses) talk about ranking potential clients' website BEFORE calling them (so that when he called them he had results to show).

(It's a recording so I can't ask this person directly.)

If you don't have access to a potential client's website, how can you rank them?

Thanks,
Michelle

90% of Search engine optimization is due to Backlinks. So in theory if you build quality backlinks for your potential buyer, then you can get his site to move up in the search engine.

But is it a good idea? If you already getting their site to rank then will they pay you ?
how do they know that you are the one who got their site to improve ranking ?

Another strategy is to call them and say " I can get your site to appear on first page of google in less 24 hours".
Then you start an Adwords campaign and get their site to show up in Adwords. If they dont know much about internet marketing, they will be quite impress with you. That's your foot in the door !

Easy. You can create a few high powered links to their site which can help them rank. It will of course depend on many factors though, like competition, keywords, etc, but it's VERY do-able.

You don't really need access to the website, only if it needs onsite optimisation. 95% of the ranking is backlinks.

Another great way is to rank a youtube video for them. make sure its a easy keyword and easy to go after.

By building a few backlinks to them on high-quality sites of contextual relevance to their site.

If they've done no off-page SEO at all, or done only mass/automated backlinking before, the difference can sometimes even be very quick and very dramatic. Quality and relevance are everything (but many webmasters don't know this).

      Thanks for the tips guys!

There's SO MANY aspects to IM. I do very well with lead capture pages, autoresponders, etc. -- other things too. SEO-related stuff is not my strong suit. (And way too many people -- from individuals to big agencies -- think it's all about SEO.)

Ok, next question: I know Google customizes each person's search results (as much as they can, anyway). If you're in CA and I'm in FL, we can both type the exact same keyword into Google and get very different results.

I shy away from the whole "I can get you #1 in Google!" pitch because 1) it's so subjective since everyone's search results are different and 2) because Google is always changing the rules. You might be #1 today, but that doesn't mean you'll be #1 tomorrow.

So if you're going after offline clients and want to "prove" you know what you're doing, how do you do that? I suppose looking at page rank/site rank is one way. Where do you go to get independent results for that (meaning, results that aren't skewed like the search results are skewed based on location and who's looking at them).

The reason I ask all of this is because I'm looking at going after some local offline clients. (I haven't done that yet.) Personally, I've been focusing on listbuilding and follow up, social media and PPC. SEO and search engine rankings is not my strong suit.

The single biggest failure of local business websites is the lack of a lead capture form and a follow-up autoresponder series! That's what I want to focus on for local clients. But, I think it would be easier to get someone to listen to me if I could show them some results regarding ranking for specific keywords first.

Most businesses with an online presence have a brochure website, not a direct-response website. And so many have been approached by people and agencies promising them the sun, moon and stars and gotten ZERO results online.

To after local clients, you have to prove that you're different. (That's why I ask.) The SEO stuff is just my foot in the door.

      Thanks,
      Michelle

Most good SEO tools will show you just about all the info you need to rank a site, even if it isn't yours.

But that's an interesting approach of doing these services for FREE and without their consent first.

I think with some experience with this approach there's some serious money to be made.

I thought it was an interesting approach too. It could be great for getting your foot in the door. But as others have mentioned, it may not be the best approach either.

But I got sidetracked with "What if I don't have access to the site...?" question.

Thanks for all of the replies guys!

I think this is a silly idea personally.

What if he then gets penalised for all the backlinks you build in such a short period of time and your the cause of his site dropping even further down the rankings ?

      Then you've screwed up, haven't you? :p

The idea is to build a few backlinks on relevant sites, to demonstrate to the webmaster "how it ought to be done".

Some people whose only previous awareness of this subject has revolved around "numbers of backlinks" and "page ranks" (and there are many totally uninformed, uninitiated website owners who still think in those terms, even now!) will be astonished.
