Adsense Monetisation Question

Hi everyone, I don't start too many threads but wanted to get some of your thoughts on this, especially guys like Yukon, Paulgl etc. who seem to know how to monetise with Adsense well. I should preface this by saying i'm not a massive fan of using adsense to monetise sites with, however, in this niche it makes sense to at least use it as part of the monetisation strategy.
This is probably really simple to answer but I don't know it myself. The adsense ads are not targeted to my niche at all so thus far CTR's have been very poor. Is there a way to get them more targeted and if so how? Also, when I check my competitors I see they also montise this niche with adsense and the ads on their site are also completely not on target so was thinking maybe it's not possible to do anything about.
