Alright, im sure 99.99999999 100% of you have heard of it, the scroogled campaign ran by Microsoft to help tout its Bing search engine of Google. Check it out here - Have you been Scroogled? Try Outlook.com for email that prioritizes your privacy.

Also, another funny thing. scroogle (without the d at the end) is actually a semi porn site, did microsoft know this when launching this campaign? lol.

anyhow, I find it to be pretty unprofessional of Microsoft to run such a campaign against Google, even if they prove to be right in all their claims. Paid shopping ads and so forth, which hey, thats exactly how Google makes their money!

What do you think? Is Bing.com Turning Out To Be The Unsuccessful High school Bully?

I thought the scroogled campaign was great marketing, if not a little heavy handed. Microsoft needed the boost in searchers and loyal Google fans are not going to leave Google.

Here's my issue with Google. The internet is HUGE and it used to be that you could put up a web page, like my first website that sold salon exclusive beauty products online, and the only trouble you would get into was that the manufacturers didn't like you doing it because they wanted to be able to "fix" prices so that people in California pay twice as much for shampoo as people in Indiana.

Now, Google divides their searches into regions and unless you know the system, you can't get your Indiana website ranked for Alterna products in California and save all those Californians $60 bucks a bottle on their shampoo. Google has made the internet MUCH MUCH smaller. That is what bugs me. But all the SEs do it. Google just does it better.

What I like most about the Scroogle campaign is that it pointed out to people that Google Shopping (formerly Froogle) was going to be run by people who have money to spend, instead of being the product overloaded bargain basement clearinghouse that it started out as. That is kind of good and kind of bad. It was getting pretty tough to compete on price in lots of markets, so this change should help people's margins a bit. My concern is that it was always tough for the little guy to get started, even on Froogle. Now that little guy has to pay to play, so there is another barrier to competition. That's going to be bad in the long run.

Yeah. Was. Kinda old news now.

For bing to be a bully, they must have something, somehow, someone,
to bully. They have none of those.

Can one be a bully with nobody to bully?

I think it should be referring to this as "jumping the shark."

Google does not have loyal fans. They have users by default.
Much like IE. Nobody really bothers to try anything else, nor
do they see a need for it. I would hardly call people google
fans. Google has created in-your-face-programs that are
      just becoming old habits.

But they're not stupid. They keep busy making sure these programs,
and new one, are still habit.

Bing is run by MS. A company that has yet to figure out anything online
      that makes a profit.

MS is a good software company. Google is a many faceted online empire.

Insight, thanks for the insight .

I never thought about how Google has made the internet smaller, because it seems to be the gateway to the entire internet. But what you have to say is quite true as far as marketing to markets other than your own when using the search engine, because with our business we are seeing a similar shortfall in different markets and rankings.

As far as the scroogled campaign is concerned, i still think it is childish lol

Yeah, when you're marketing to childish people....

Actually Google only controls about 6% of all internet traffic. They and about 30 other companies control a little over 50%, and they do have the largest share of any company, but think about that. Only 6% and they became a multi-billion dollar company. The last count I saw said they only have about one half of one percent of the internet indexed.

Since I started crawling a couple years ago, I've found out a lot. Most of the internet is junk. More than you would guess is porn. And all the big guys are eating up all the little guys.

In 2006, when I used to do client work, we told our clients that they needed multiple websites to be effective. Now all the big companies have dozens or hundreds of websites. Its a totally different game now. In real life, the big banks are buying up the little banks. On the internet the big players are buying up the little players.

    What business are you in?

Cool, I bought "NewCarsFortWayne.com" a couple years ago, but haven't had time to do anything with it. Seemed like a fun market. PM me if you want to chat about Google's regions and how to increase your visibility in them. Otherwise, good luck to you. I don't want to get too far off topic on this thread
