Can lost EMD rankings be recovered?

I have an aged (8 years old) exact match keyphrase domain which always enjoyed top 5 results in google.co.uk for many years, then got slapped by the penalty last year on EMDs.

It still ranks in top 3 in yahoo and Bing.

Is there any way to get these kind of domains back to good ranking with Google, or is their ranking lost for good?

opinions appreciated. Thanks

You need to find out what the penalties are first. Are you sure it was slapped?

People need to realise that you don't get penalised for having an EMD, that wouldn't make sense. The change we saw was that EMD lost it's power as a ranking factor for a website's ranking.

You can "recover" from it if your site deserves to be where you want it in the serps.

I have been saying this for months! Take a look around. Most sites are EMDs...

I had a similar experience. What I did was buy another domain that was more of a brand than an exact match domain, cloned the penalised site, stuck it on the new domain and then did a page for page redirect from the old EMD to the new brandable domain.

Rankings came back in 3 weeks. In other words, the new site took on the rankings that the old EMD used to have.

Yes...you can get it back...and EMDs did not get slapped...over optimization did...also, the age of a domain means nothing contrary to popular belief...Google doesn't care how old your domain is...

Probably, yes! You can still recover from EMD!

  • EMD's that were slapped were on top without any quality backlinks, so if you want your top ranking position back get some quality backlinks and i am sure you will gain your top position again.

  • Recently i came through many EMD's on top that were slapped and after analyzing their website i saw that they had a very good offpage optimization done on their website.

Getting your rankings back really depends on what type of work you had done I think. You mentioned that it is an EMD, but are you sure that is what made you lose your rankings? Did you use public blog networks or anything of the sort on the site?

Yes you can recover an EMD but you'll probably need to work hard on your content
