How Important are Trackbacks and Pingbacks?

Hi,

The title says it all. Are these imp? I am receiving several trackbacks and pingbacks (T&P) on my sites. Though I don't allow comments but this is something I don't know how to deal with. Also, some of the websites that send T&P don't look good - there's no content, only links. While some sites are ok. How can I filter? Will trashing these help?

Just don't approve that spam trackback..

  Sometimes they can flood you with hundreds of spam trackbacks in a day. It happened to me. I think they do it to irritate you. Of course, they know you won't approve their links.

I'm using an anti-spam system called 'Mollom'. It's created by the same team that developed Drupal. It's still in the Beta phase but I haven't had problems yet.

I like Mollom because the challenge/response takes place on their servers and doesn't 'clog' your site.
