Well there are a lot of people talking that directory submission does not affect more. So what you think about this? It is still safe to built lots of directories, or google will ignore them or make your rank worste?

The amount of directories that would actually help, are
counted on two fingers. Maybe help. The rest are junk.

Don't waste your time on junk.

Sure, you may hear a ton of people cargo-on nonsense about
how their directory or joe shmo's directory is the $#!t'$.
    Don't believe it.

In my opinion it's more like 7 fingers:

      Dmoz
      Yahoo
      Business.com
      FamilyFriendlySites (one of my favorites)
      BOTW
      JoeAnt
      CannyLink

      and some niche-specific directories.

Submitting to more than 7-15 directories is probably a waste of resources.

But I still use them because I almost always notice SERP difference.

      Sir, it is not so...

Even NA, PR0 directories are helpful today...

The thing is you need to use unique description, diversify titles and do it on regular basis but slowly.....

Directory submission is a method of link building, it is not a website and Google can't ignore it....most importantly, it is the oldest method of link building...

Have you found anywhere that Google says that directory submission is not allowed?

Why not a PR na/zero directory? All high pr directories were pr na directory one day....

Don't do it, it's a waste of money and your time. Submit your site to DMOZ if you have a good site and search for pr6+ directories to submit your site. If you have money Yahoo directory is recommended by some people because of high PR and Yahoo being a trust site, but it costs money

Alot of people seem to think that directories are now useless, however they still have SEO benefits and help you increase your overall link diversity. The problem is that they don't result in organic traffic like web2.0s and social bookmarks offer.

Submit only to the directories that have a user base. Otherwise it's a waste of time.

Hi dejaone - just wondering if what you mean by user base is a mailing list - is this right? Can you give a little bit more detail?

Are you saying having a directory submission for a directory with an active user base means more chance of getting traffic?

Initially, you can do directory submission, since it will give your site with a good start. You can carry on the campaign for the first 6 months, then you don't need to carry it on anymore.

As in the beginning Google will visit your site very less often, that's why directories are great help that point of time to get your site cached, and also help you to increase your page rank in Google.

But before to submit your site to a particular site make sure that web directory is up to the mark like it has Good Page rank, they are getting cached frequently, they plenty of back links etc. and if you are satisfied with the number then only you should go ahead and submit your link.

Well i have understand that it can help only in cases that you submit some on relevant directory website with good pr, but can it worste your rank if you will submit or random pr directory, let's say some directory of pr 2 or 3. Becouse if it will not help only but will be indifferent why not doing them, if have more 2000 views a day, so maybe sometimes someone will click on yours submission!

So now the problem is: Does google can not rank well if you have lots of directories? Or this does not much a lot?

From SEO 2013 prospective, you need to consider listing out top page rank websites and submit the same into it,as directory submission plays important role in getting back links for the website. Getting top quality back links will help to get page rank as well as ranking for the website.

Its a big question for link generate from dir submission is good or bad. I think dir is better for backlink, PR. But you have to generate it from high PR and trusted sites. May be it will be costlier, but good for your site.

Directory submission has been one of the most effective and most economical ways of creating quality links to your blog or website. However, after the recent Google penguin update will doing directory helps in ranking a site or keywords. To success with this, you must submit your website URL and relevant information about website to a pertinent category.

I don't think so that directory submission is waste of time. If DS is waste of time then why we submit our website in dmoz, yahoo directory. Directory submission is helpful only when we submit our website in high authority websites.

Well, it certainly does help. Just don't submit to 1000000000 directories using some automated machine, then don't submit at all forever after. Whatever amount of directories you submit to, make sure that you can keep that up for as long as possible.

Meaning, you can actually submit to 1000 directories each and every single day IF you can keep up to that same standard. Google just wants to see consistency, it doesn't penalize you if you can keep it up at that rate. Only when you can't , then Google will treat you as spam.

    Hope I helped
