I was shocked to discover a very new website simultaneously on pages 1, 2 and 3 of Google search results, in a very competitive niche, for very competitive keywords (buy e-cigarette).
The domain was registered on 15th of February 2013 for 1 year, the site is a small WordPress blog, using an 'Elegant theme' and the Yost SEO plugin.

How is it possible? What is the secret?

Google Search Engine Result Position is up and down, it's dynamic , it's not static, it's not permanent. Everyday SERP is up and down. After google re calculated their database, that site will push higher or flush lower..

It's probably a churn & burn strategy where they utilize huge networks like SAPE or spam their way to the top in other ways. Check back in 2-3 weeks to see if he still is there. 99% chance he's not. But if he makes plenty of money in that time stack, which he probably does, then he just keeps repeating it over and over.

New sites generally enjoy good ranking at the beginning - a ranking surge, but virtually disappear from the radar after a while. Google is well known for doing that.

1000+ diverse links, most do-follow and 98 anchor keywords with "electric cigarette" at 18% and then decending 1% per kw.

I agree this is a crash and burn. SEMRush shows 9k visitors? Must be making some nice cash?

Not too sure this is churn and burn! Check it out in ahref.com
This is pretty good work and they have been around for a while. Site has 2 years of whois records and

      11,940 BL's, 1266 ref. IP's, 331 No-follow (far too low) etc. etc. Spike in BL's/Domains from 3/11 to 4/28 - down again now. Very flat before 3/11.

Spam strategy thought. 302 links from clanm1.com; 213 links from Home | IRA Property Master etc. Guess a heavy Fiverr cust :-)

I still seem them on #2 - so still works (and yes - no doubt raking in a tonne of $$$ but definitely short to strat. Na well - rinse repeat, short term! Probably one alternative way of making it.

Cannot agree with you. May be that site is targeting a very low competitive keyword and this is why it may got ranking that quickly.
