I just made a new gaming website, and it ranked on page 1 of google instantly, I didn't do anything to the site, I just added a 1500 word article.

although it keeps bouncing around from time to time, I'm wondering if I should build links to this page or just leave it set and see what it does on it's own.

during the bounce, rank tracker still says the site is at number 4, or number 1, ect.

the keywords get 18000 searches combined, and when i'm #4 I get about 50 visitors a day.

You have not mentioned what terms it is ranking for in such a short time. I am assuming it could be for long tail keywords in your niche. If your article is ranking for the short tail, then it could be that the QDF component of ranking algorithm (Query Deserves Freshness) is making it rank highly on page 1. It will disappear after a short period of time. If it is an outstanding article that is getting syndicated in other sites by visitors reading it, then there is a natural link building process going on which will help the site retain a high ranking. It is hard to tell without knowing the specifics of the scenario you have painted.

no it was a brand new domain, I don't want to give the keyword out at this time but it's not a long tail keyword by any means, I could potentially get a couple hundred visitors a day if it sticks.

    it was an EMD also.

im going slow with link building right now, and its been sticking for a week now.

how could rank tracker show a different rank than google though, I signed out, and cleared my cookies during the bounce, and rank tracker still showed it at 4.

Don't share the keyword with anyone ever. You will only increase competition if you do.

Even for a new domain, link building is ok, just don't go to town on it lol.

I build links manually with guest posting and blog commenting. I suggest you find some High PR, low Alexa ranked sites and that will help with some good link juice and publishing content on high traffic sites can bring traffic to your site too.

I do this with small niche sites, works every time and beats these Google updates.

      Hope this helps

amen, this is one of them keywords that anyone can rank for instantly if they just do on page right so giving the keyword out would risk traffic.

I do notice that the top 10 sites where not trying to rank for that keyword, so I made my article look like I wasn't trying to rank for it either, although I had my main on page factors in place.

I can probably own the entire top 10 with web 2.0, video and my site, as I already have a squidoo ranking, I think a lot of my ranking has to do with having a link on that squidoo page which is #1, I just don't want the squidoo page to outrank my site forever haha.

Build some trust links from authority sites, make the anchor text natural, create some useful and fresh content, it would help in fluctuation as well.

If you want to be competitive, aside from adding quality content to your site and update frequently, you should also build links to it. If your site looks active, there’s a big possibility that it will be crawled regularly. Also, acquire links from high authority domain. Build links slowly and keep building to maintain the link velocity.

When you talk about a news website that its quit difficult because every site take its time to progress and creating authority because all the great votes consider for domain authority and building such links and popularity take time. But you cant say its impossible. But while we talk about good links then we need to understand how search engine measure quality links http://support.google.com/webmasters...n&answer=66356

It's no surprise, may be #1 site is getting more conversions and very few visitors may be looking at your website, which is in #4.

It also depends on nationality/country. Different factors involves when coming to different national varied search engine's.

You may rank #1 in US & you may #4 in ca etc.

Of course, building links would have benefit. Make sure the links are genuine.

This is common. I've had many sites showing up on the first page before I've finished building them. Google likes to show new content quickly and find out if people like it.

If you want the site rankings to last then you'd be crazy to not market it in the hope that the earlier rankings will stick if you do nothing.

There are many reasons you may be getting your results but showing up in Google, definitely don't share your site/niche unless you're desperate.
