What SEO strategy to use?

Hi all, I've created a site called Treatment For Mental Illness. I've optimised the site using a WP plugin to make sure that my pictures have alt tags, H1-H3 tags with relevant keywords, Title has keyword, approx 1.0-2.0% keyword density in article contents. Articles use similar long tail keywords. All the standard stuff.

Yahoo and Bing like my site. They rank me #2, but as this is a long tail I'm only getting about 5-10 pageviews per day, bounce rate of 100% roughly (is this time based, or whether they move off the main page). Google has me nowhere, assuming this is a timing thing as the site has only been live for about a week now.

I wanted to write an article on peoples perception around mental illness and posted a question on Yahoo Answers and Quora with a link to my site. Both would be considered as high Authority sites although the links will only be in front of people for a short time.

I'm also tossing up whether to keep the main page with all the posts and categories along the top menu. Or simply have a main article as a static front page with the categories along the top.

I've looked into link building but finding that most sites are very internalised as in most of their links are within their own site.

I do plan to link my articles together where possible. I have achieved this with a plugin that shows recommended posts at the bottom of each article.

Please have a look and let me know what I should be doing!

Thanks!

Because you are supposed to deal with patients suffering from mental illness, so your concern should be upon local segment. Local seo would be better. Hire a local seo company and share your business plan.I do not think you would be able to all by self.

My plan is to provide a general site that caters to both people suffering from mental illness and people supporting people with mental illness so it's not tailored to a local area.

So you're not providing a service but are providing information. How are you monetizing this site? Adsense?

Consider doing a mix of both options. Have a sticky post as the main content of your homepage or if you are good with editing code modify your index template and put in your content above where the posts begin and have your other posts below the main homepage content.

    IMO

Content needs work - you won't connect with your target market.
The onpage SEO is at best a little ropey and "unique content" is best when you're starting off.

Learn what you readers really want then you'll have a better chance of delivering.

You need to narrow down you niche readers a bit first

There is only two SEO strategy which will do all the works and you will not be in worry at any Google update.
1.) Write original content with good explanation and in simple language for users.
2.) try to get some high PR backlinks.

I always use the following strategy to rank any keyword :
    - At first I create a short video and then post it to youtube.
    - Then I create some quality article posting using SEnuke XCr.
    - Then I use Xrumer and Scrapebox to create 2nd tier forum profile links and blog comments.

This strategy is very powerful and after penguin update I am getting results. I suggest you to try this, I am sure you will get success.

OP, I see that you miss a Privacy Policy on your website. Google kinda' requires them if you want to be treated nicely.

Also, have you done any kind of off-page seo? You need to create some indexed backlinks with the anchor text of your keywords you want to rank.

I still wonder how your website shows #2 as you claimed!

1)Bounce rate 100% -May be your visitors didn't liked your content & skipping away.

2)When i performed duplicate copy research via copy-scape, it showed up 10 results, where every page has more than 520 words or 19-24% content as copied, compared to your website.

Solution:- Write your content again, make sure that it meets at-least 80% unique content.

3)Just had a look at source files.

I didn't understood why you used two seo plugin's, this may conflict & result in no seo benefit!

4)Saw unrelated links in source files, every static files coming through the below highlighted domain!

    Summary:-

    *Write up unique content
    *Set only one seo plugin(yoast-recommended)
    *Check & perform on-page optmization
*Do some contribution to other authoritative bloggers & get some link juice.
*Follow & engage in social communities(fb, twitter)

Just so you know, those links are nofollow. Believe what you want to believe but I don't think nofollow links do much for you.

The plan will be to monetize it via Adsense, and been pondering over the idea of list building but not sure if I'll have enough content to warrant that. But if so another option is to sell advertising space. Or sell my own advertising space on site.

MissionOps, what do you mean by the content? And by the seo being ropey? And thanks for the advice about narrowing my niche, my plan is to have each post/page for a particular niche so each one will be optimized for that particular keyword.

jacksarloks, thanks for the feedback. I wasn't aware that Yahoo! Answers was nofollow but still feel there is benefit as I'm targeting people who are clearly interested in mental health (specific category) and my research into peoples perceptions of mental health has had some interest from viewers.

eliteinfoweb - thanks very much for the list of off-page options.

SeoWizzard - thanks for the privacy policy idea, will get that sorted.

MightyGeek, i don't know either. But when I search yahoo for "treatment for mental illness" my site pops up in #2 spot. And thanks I'll do some rewriting. And I'll ditch the All-In-One seo pack. I also have another SEO pluging but this one is more about analysing the page so shouldn't conflict.

Thanks guys, looking forward to the excellent feedback!

Also, I checked, you are linking same ads on every page, that doesn't look good or natural, try to post advertisement related to the page heading..

New sites often take a while to come into the SERPs if it is already not ranking (this goes for all new sites building backlinks for the first time). Aside from doing on-page, also do off-page optimization by having diverse link profile and acquiring links from different high authority domains, i.e. web 2.0s, wiki (both dofollow and nofollow), press release, blog posts, video, document sharing, etc. The link velocity should be taken one step a time.

Since you’re planning to monetize your site by putting AdSense, continue on adding fresh and relevant content to your site. It’s always nice to promote a website with useful content. Also, if the visitors will like your content/site, they will link to it and make your content viral. This will lead to good amount of traffic and a higher rank in the SERPs. AdSense works best when you have a long term view and strategy.

First of all congrats on doing a good job on creating a useful Adsense site for that niche. That's the positive.

Now the immediately bad situation and what that you need to immediately get to work on, FINISHING the site requirements for the Adsense program. Good looking useful site for the users, but one complaint from a competitor and one manual review once Google flags your account for good amount of clicks once ranking it, and your out of Adsense at least with your real name..like many.

So, add a private policy. Surprises not to see this recommended here. So basic and SOOO important to have it. Followed by, trying to customize the theme anytime soon or eventually as one you get a good amount of clicks, I am sure your site will get reviewed by the Adsense department and the flexibility theme is clearly a made for adsense theme. Not sure if you can remove that bottom link with your license, but I know I'll remove it. So if you can according to your theme license, remove the bottom link. Will look even more professional and the possibilities of keeping out of trouble with the Adsense department are even higher as you'll likely keep building more useful content and improving on the overall experience of your likely one time visitors. Just thinking my way and how Adsense department will think for their business, so careful there and hey..congrats Magnatolia. Good site for Adsense.
