Hi,

I am a complete newbie when it comes to measuring results.
I have a golf club to sell which I will promote on the biggest golfsites there is.
Now I'd like to measure and test my results.

I want to buy 3 different Ads in 3 different places on the site,
and then to measure which ad did the best.

How can I do this as simple as possible?

Thanks.

    Stolpioni,

You could use measurement tools from your ad partner (either an ad network or publisher). They would need you to place certain js code on your landing pages, checkout page etc. This would help you measure how much you effectively paid for a click, search, buy etc.

If you are buying ads from a provider who does not provide such tracking, you could use something like Google Analytics to track user behavior once paid traffic starts hitting your site.

Just curious, but why are you looking to go outside Google? If you have used Google earlier, what are the measurement/audit systems that your used while running campaigns on Google?

I'm not doing adwords, I'm actually setting up a banner.
They have 3 different banner spots in different sizes, and first of all I'll need to test which size is the most profitable. One costs $5 CPM, second $10 CPM and third one $15 CPM.

The next thing to do is that I'll need to see how well my salespage does, once the visitors comes in.

Can I do all this in Google Analytics? (To add, I've never measured anything before, neither on google adwords nor with banner ads).

        Brilliant. Makes sense.

I had meant Google's Content Network (GDN - Google Display Network).

You should be able to do all this using Google Analytics with ease.

        1) Ensure that you have 3 different referral URLs for the site (the URL that the user will be sent to once they click on your ads).

Lets assume that you give www.mysite.com+utm_source=publisher+utm_ad=15
as the referral URL for the USD 15 CPM banner.

        This means that
        www.mysite.com+utm_source=publisher+utm_ad=5
will be the referral URL for the USD 5 CPM banner and

        www.mysite.com+utm_source=publisher+utm_ad=10
will be the referral URL for the USD 10 CPM banner

(Please see URL builder - Analytics Help for more data on creating URLs with UTM parameters)

        2) Start your campaign(s)

        3) Monitor how visitors coming in from each of these URLs behave (bounce rate, time on site, pages visited etc). You can also set conversion goals in Google Analytics (conversions can be opting in to your list, downloading an book etc) to see how visitors from each of their URLs are helping your achieve your goals.

        Hope this is of help.

          Great stuff, thanks a bunch!
It was a lot easier than I thought.

Will do exactly what you said.

Take a look at google experiments or google analytic goals - you can track sales with these
