Is WP Theme sponsoring effective?

I am heading to running a very big authority site and I am considering sponsoring some themes for backlinks. Any feedback on this is highly appreciated.

    I can't remember who it was, but I think Google went after a theme developers sitewide links in all their free theme footers sometime last year (2012).

    Maybe someone else will remember who it was they went after?

    Maybe, and this is a BIG maybe, WPMU was penalised because the link was pretty much on every page. What I would do if I were to sponsor a WP theme, I would only place the link on the homepage (I'm pretty sure that's possible).

    I would stay clear. Hundreds of penalties were dealt out for that. It will only hurt you.
