Title tag is one of the most important on-page SEO elements (along with the overall content) since it meant to be a concise description of your webpage’s content. It appears in the top of the browser and related tabs, in the SERPs, and sometimes in the external websites (like social media website, it’s often used as link anchor text). It’s actually valuable for both seo and user experience.

Meta tags on the other hand are intended for gaining user click-through from the SERPs. It’s valuable for search marketing since it serves like an advertising copy to attract searchers.

Page title, (meta tag) is very important element of a website, you should put main keyword in the title, it should read like a sentence too, you would get benefit from this.

There are 3 things to consider when looking at this area of SEO. There are 1. Title Tags, 2. Meta Description Tags, and 3. Meta Keywords Tags.

    1. Title Tags are one of the most important factors of successful search engine optimization of your website. It should be between 10-60 characters, (including spaces) They are the introduction that people will see in the search results, so make them count! This is where valuable keywords will be used, but they need to look natural. Google will use the Title Tags when pulling search results, so spend time educating yourself on this. You will also want to include your company name here if you are trying to build a brand.

    2. Meta Description Tags- should be under 160 characters. This will tell your visitors what your site is all about when looking at the search engine result page. It should ideally be a short sentence and include some sort of call to action or reason that someone should click to visit your site.

    3. Meta Keywords Tags -- This is the least important thing to consider, as Google does not use these for search results anymore. However other search engines like Yahoo, or Bing may still use these, so no harm in including them. You should put between 4-10 keywords here, and make sure they are relevant to your site and the keywords should also appear in the text on the webpage.

Here are a couple of really helpful articles on the subject of creating them:

Meta tags. as listed above, are quite useless. Even description. I don't want
to hear any BS about improving CTR, because it can kill it as well.

Now, anyone who does not know that the current title tag that matters is
NOT a meta tag, well, what that say? Many times I have said that anyone
who does not know certain things like this, needs to get out of the game.
      Or go learn.

It comes from people never having to code their own websites. They
      don't know basic things.

I remember a day when the meta title tag actually meant something.
That was 1997. The meta title tag has gone the way of the dinosaur.
It's not used anymore. If people knew the history of those meta
tags: keywords, description, title, they would know that they were for
directories. These places trusted webmasters to tell the truth.

Google changed all that around 2000.

But, sadly, still doing meta tags in 2013 is just something people do
to make them feel good. They are not used in rankings, and google
      does not need your description.

So, get your title in order. It's one of the first signals google
      looks at.

So you're saying that the description META tag is completely meaningless? Google doesn't use it at all?

My META descriptions show up in the blurb under the results in Google so I figured that the description had at least a little bit of weight.

The meta description is one of those things where it's not a big deal as far as actually ranking a page, but the SERP description can be a good indicator of what exactly Google is looking at on your own ranked web page.

If you don't have a meta description tag on your page, you rank that same page in Google SERPs, then check your keyword in something like Chrome Incognito (no browser history/cache, etc...), you'll see which part of your own web page Google is focused on for your keyword being searched.

Example, I can rank a page, not have a meta description tag, include a keyword in my image Alt text (single instance of that keyword phrase on the entire site), search that same keyword in Chrome Incognito & Google will display my image Alt text inside the ranked SERP listing description (text).

I've seen site go from page 11 to page 1 of the SERPs in 4 days just by changing the title tag.

I have also bought expired domains, thrown up a web site, optimised the title tag for a completely new and different search term and have them rank on page 1.

Title is very important because it represents your main body and content . Title should be short but descriptive too, because it's the first impression of your whole thing what you offering to the user ,so be careful about title.

Just how strategic is your optimization?

That person is a male bot, masquerading as a woman. I thought "it"
was long gone. * sigh *

Meta description has no weight, not even a little. People think that because google
may use it in serps, that somehow it has weight. It doesn't, and google is under no
        obligation to use it.

And to the many people who think it plays a part in CTR, that's an iffy proposition
at best. First, you have to be on page one. Since meta description has not play
in SERP position, doesn't it seem moot? The clincher is this. Why do you think
google highlights your search words? Probably something else on your page is
going to have those words. Which means, if your decription doesn't have all
such words, then why ask a searcher to wade through junk?

Searchers for the most part, are dumb sheep. That's why amazon, fb, youtube,
etc. are some of the most searched for terms.

It's one of the first things that search engines see regarding your site, so there should be a lot of thought put into the title tag.

It's bar none the most important on-page SEO element.

Although not a requirement, it can help to put your keyword at the beginning of your title tag.

Moz found that title tags with the keyword towards the beginning ranked slightly better vs. those that had their keyword towards the end:

It is important to the user. So I'd say continue to do them or start. Google will just use your home pages main title for every single page on your site. Ask yourself, does that really help potential visitors? It may not be the deciding factor in rankings but its beneficial to the user.
