Duplicate Content Question

I have a question about duplicate content.

I have a travel themed website and I have a page that lists a lot of travel products. I currently use Amazon affiliate links for the products in my niche.

The amazon links point to the US version of Amazon but I get about 40% of my traffic from the UK, Australia and Canada. I wanted to take this one page and make three identical versions but change the affiliate links to better target those countries -- and hopefully earn higher commissions.

I'm just afraid of duplicate content penalties. I especially don't want my original page penalized since it brings in 90% of my site's revenue. Also, I'd rather not rewrite the articles because the article is 5000 words.

I know there are plugins that change the amazon links based on the user's IP but I've heard that some Canadians order from the US site because some products are cheaper there than the Canada version.

Or is there a better option?

  • why not just use a script to change a snippet of text or just the links based on the ip location of the visitor.

so 95% of your text stays the same for everyone and just a small snippet or maybe even just the links change based on a users location.
  • I agree w/ David - good idea actually

    • An easier approach would be to create sub-directories as in www.site.com/au for Australia, www.site.com/uk for UK and so on.

In Webmasters account, specify the au sub-directory for Australian audience, uk for British audience etc.

This will then let Google know that www.site.com/uk is more relevant for British audience and will tend to display that page in Google SERPS in UK.
  • Look for a 'geo redirection script'.
This is exactly the script that does what the previous replier described.

    Sincerely,
