Lets say I purchase an aged domain with a good number of back links and high PR. if I then did a 301 redirect on it would my site benefit, even if the domain was in an unrelated niche ?

    it will pass the PR, but it wont do anything for your rankings if thats what you are after...

    This is exactly what people do all the time to sell domains...they pass the fake PR with a redirect, you buy what you thought was a high PR domain...then they remove the redirect and you have a PR0...

    It could benefit or it might not do anything at all. Or it could hurt your site if the domain you are redirecting has crap pointed at it and penalties. Any baggage would be pointed to your site.
    If the domain is in an unrelated niche it could be bad too, because if there's a lot of anchor text links that have nothing to do with your website pointing to this unrelated niche domain, that are passed on to your site through the redirect that wouldn't look very natural.
    But if you do your research and look out for shadiness it might benefit you some. I personally wouldn't do it. If the domain was worth anything authority wise I'd create a site with it instead.
