Backlink Creation is My Achilles Heel - Is it Yours?

Hi guys,

I'm working out some niches for myself for the first time (I'm a web veteran and developer), but find that creating quality backlinks really is a job I dislike.

Do you feel the same? How have you gotten over it and made it happen for your projects?

Why not forget about creating artificial backlinks (because we know the search engines are liking them less and less) and instead focus that energy on creating content that people want to share. That way people create all of the links NATURALLY and they do all the work for you.

It's a much smarter way to do things.

My take on things is if you need to be creating artificial backlinks to help your site rank then it probably is a site that doesn't deserve the rankings you are trying to get it.

Sort of a Catch 22 isn't it? I could write the best content in the world on [insert topic here] but if it's sitting back on page 20...how are people going to "want to share" something they don't know exists? Sure, eventually a few people might stumble across it and eventually (several months, years?) it may starting getting links and rank naturally, but I think artificial linking (as in building quality links to your own sites) has its place.

Even if those "artificial links" are enough to push you into a top spot initially, I would say user interaction with your site and the quality of your content will ultimately determine if you STAY there. If you've got a 99.9% bounce rate and average visit times of 2 seconds, I'd say Google would rather rank another site over yours regardless of the power of your "artificial" linking. At least one would hope, lol.

Chris, this was a great way to cover both aspects of this thread. Thank you. Very common sense and succinct - well done, mate!

The whole content vs. link building is a false dichotomy.

Why not build great content AND links?

Like Chris said, what good is great content if no one sees it?

In fact, great content lets you leverage link building opportunities lame ass niche sites can only dream of.

So do both: kill it with content and build those links. It's a combination for insane traffic.

Good call and the links can help the content be found in the SERPS which can inturn result in natural sharing/backlinking.

Building high quality backlinks like Press Releases,Sattelite Blogs,Article Directories and so on will make you rank a lot faster then "writing stunning content" and hope for people to naturally create links. Also, the above type of backlinks are great sources of traffic aswell. If your niche is in a serious competition, you should diversify your platforms a lot more then that.

    Cheers

people who say "artificial" backlinking is a waste simply dont understand how to do it and make blanket statements like that...

high PR backlinking is Googles krpytonite and unless they stop valuing high PR links in the future, that will always be the case, so those who know what they are doing will simply continue to take whatever ranking they want...not looking to argue, buts that's the truth...

Creating a killer content can do wonders, but it wont rank you instantly to no1. You have work for that. I'm not talking about some links that you can put on WEB2.0, social bookmarks and directory sites. Simply open you )%#/(¤"! e-mail folder and start sharing your site url (AWESOME CONTENT) to different webmasters.

Eventually you get linked form here and there and people will start to pick up your awesome content naturally. But yeah, like mentioned before, it won't happen when you are just sitting on your 20th page.
