Niche Sites In 2013 And Beyond

What do you guys think about building niche sites in 2013? If you build an email list and think long term, is it viable? And is anyone having success with niche sites?

I'm not a huge fan of niche sites for the simple reason that Google is putting more emphasis on brands to sort out the deluge of content that they have to sort out.

And it's hard enough to build one brand, nevermind 12.

That being said, Spencer at Niche Pursuits is having a lot success with his public niche site project. Worth checking out his site and his project.

    One website should have niche.
Even huge, huge blogs, such as Mashable are built around a niche.
Not picking up a niche means that you haven't picked up your targeted audience.

However, I think your question may concern the "micro niche" websites, that are used to make money from few very similar keywords. They are being ignored recently.

If you build an email list and think long term, you wouldn't regret after a while

    Cheers

niche sites will always be money makers if you know what you're doing and can rank them...its kindergarten easy to launch a new site every day that makes $100+ per month. There was a time where I would pump out 3-4 sites per day 5 days a week...I dont have the energy for that kind of volume anymore...lol

The Google game will always change...its just a matter of adapting and not building sites in a dumb way that get hit with the likes of panda/penguin/your next favorite animal updates...

I assume when you say niche site, your not talking MFA.

I've been targeting a single niche for years with multiple sites (all in the same niche), yes it works today & will still work this time next year & the year after.

The thing that makes it easier than sites like MFA is, I know the niche without looking at keyword tools, because I've worked in the niche & like what I'm doing. I still SEO (no reason not to) but that's only a portion of my traffic & that's done on purpose to keep me from being dependent on a single source of traffic.

I see a lot of folks around here preaching diversify your income sources, that's fine but you spread yourself thin over too many different types of things & you get nowhere fast. IMO, it's easier to stay in a single niche (for the most part) & diversify the traffic sources. Why rank a single page for a keyword when you can have 2 sites/pages ranking for the same main keywords. If position #1 gets traffic in the SERPs, position #2 is guaranteed to have additional traffic looking for the same keyword/product/service...
