Another possibility might be to use a benign domain name and add your keyword as a subdomain.

YourKeyword.genericname.tld

if

YourKeyword.tld

is gone.

Even

genericname.tld/YourKeyword

might work for you.

many people add a 1 or z to the end, the thing to keep in mind of course is how does that look. If it is does in a way that it does not look bad then that is a good way to go.

Not a good option I think. Because using double hyphens makes a domain complicated. It became very hard to remember the domain.

The Google update that changed EMD performance simply made it less important than it was before, but IMO the domain name is still the single most important on-site factor in SEO.

Google rolled out an update last October that penalizes EMDs that have other poor quality signals (overly optimized anchor text, spammy links, etc.).

Go with the advice of those above who've advocated for building a brand rather than focusing on EMDs and you'll be much better off.

That EMDs are past their prime has already been mentioned - unless you are TOTALLY dependent on search engine traffic (never a good idea), your other traffic sources won't care what your domain is.
