Onsite SEO and some other stuff

Hey guys!

Just wanted to add to the conversation about the importance of onsite optimziation with some experiences of our own.

We found that getting pages to the top ranks aren't in actually that hard to start. You really need a good onsite optimized foundation such as sizable content (depending on content type) as well as some basic keyword optimization to show that your website is related to the topic. Some key tips to consider on this is:
- Diversity but within niche. Meaning instead of using the same keyword try different similar variations so Google sees your centralized topic without over optimizing
- Sometimes consistency helps but this really varies by site. What we mean is including your keyword in the meta description and throughout your content. Some are fine even with just partial keywords in their content (but we found these sites to be high authority sites we work with)

Then comes the link building, the basics is considering a natural plan. Don't rock your site with 100s of link if it's new (unless you're building up with social, as you know it isn't uncommon to boost 1000 of links once your site goes viral. So if you want to do a huge link push, we find that starting off with a good social campaign helps very much)
Other than that, here are some key basics aspects to consider:
- Good link diversity, been said time and time again
- Contextual links like press release still works well.
- Article directories are effective despite what people keep saying
- Social bookmarks are getting more and more tricky (wasn't as easy as it used to be)
- Web 2.0 still add value
- Perhaps one of the newer link source is sites like slideshare etc. where you can get traffic as well as backlinks. These seem to work well
- Wiki links are overrated

Now that we've got the basics down, the key part is keeping your sites rank. Once your site gets onto the first page you'll start getting more consistent hit but if your users are bouncing off your sites it won't take long before Google catches something is fishy and takes a hit to your ranks.

We found this personally with our own site that was churning out a good passive income however our content became outdated and as we noticed our bounce rate increase so did our rank drop drastically. A quick update in content and our bounce rate changed, we followed up with a bit more links and the site started climbing and staying there.

However I've found other web properties of ours that completely drop off after being on the front page because User's weren't catching on to the content.

This really now emphasizes that SEO, getting to the first page is a good start but with the bounce rate guages you really need the quality content that engage your users to keep it there.
Some tips you might want to consider:
- Keep your content update to date and relevant
- Perhaps an easier solution might be including interactive elements like videos, polls etc.
- Design is so important, make sure your content is readily available but still encouraging the user to scroll down to see the full content. So basically what might work well is keeping your text bigger and having them to scroll down the page to evaluate the whole content instead of a simple blog post with the full article above fold. This will encourage users to interact more with your site and potentially give more time to your site as they have to mentally scroll down your site reducing the bounce rate. However keep enough information up the fold so that it shows the content relevancy.

Hopefully these tips might help some of you. Can't emphasize enough the importance of customized SEO these days. High emphasis on consulting with the onsite element. This is why we have started to draw away from prepackaged services (we find while this is effective for many, a lot neglect their onsite and get frustrated when they don't get results) and go for a more well rounded offering with onsite and offsite. This combo of onsite and offsite has always been important but more and more elements are being considered for onsite these days.
