Non-SERP strategy for website

Hi guys,

I have a few domains that I don't see any potential for search engine traffic generation. One being howdohybridcarswork - might be a good niche site and I do have a couple of articles ready to go.

I'm seeing that niche sites are basically impossible to rank anymore if the plan is to not keep them updated all the time. Originally I was going to have 3-5 articles of around 500-600 words and the odd affiliate link here and there. If I got good traffic I could put up some banner ads and strip out Adsense.

Anyway, my understanding of the marketplace now is that this is nearly impossible. So what I'm thinking of doing, as I potentially don't care about search engine visibility for this particular domain and it's just gathering digital dust I was going to focus on other tactics.

For example I would have someone write an article, post it to a couple of the article directories and use a service to generate backlinks to the article. If I could automate the service but only select backlinks in a category or with a keyword that would be fantastic. Even if I make the cost of the domain reg back that would be good.

Is this a good plan? Or is it still possible to rank highly on that type of site? If so what would you recommend I read/watch/follow/act on to learn how to do this?

Thanks heaps!

You can still rank EMDs. There's nothing wrong them as long as you build quality links (links that are relevant to your niche) and the content is good/original. No scrapped articles etc.

Also mix it up with pictures and videos. Make the site a nice experience for your visitors.

I don't build EMDs anymore but my existing sites are all ranking in 2013.

Thanks for the reply Smodha, so what strategy do you use to build your links and get your sites ranking well when you were creating them?

I use a mix of Web 2.0s, blog comments, social bookmarks etc.

In my experience, blog comments from high PR, relevant sites works a treat and Google is catching onto this big time.

I agree with mickss. Try to vary the anchor text so that you don't suffer from an over optimization penalty.

Thanks smodha, what do you mean a mix of web 2.0s? So you create some unique articles, one for each web 2.0 then use an automated backlinking strategy to get traffic to your main site?

          Thanks!

Adding to smodha's comments, for EMDs I personally would not use the EMD keyword very often as your anchor text e.g, how do hybrid cars work.

I create between 10-20 Web 2.0 "buffer" sites and post about 500 words on each. You can use the same content (that's what I do). I just mix it up by moving around paragraphs, titles etc.

Add some videos and images to the Web 2.0 and over time it will build PR. Spend some time on this tier but the next tier (or two) down you can really go crazy with backlink blasts.

The best strategy one can do is to get quality back links for the website that will help you to get better rankings along with traffic as well.

Acquire quality links from different high authority website - submission on article directories, creating contextual backlinks to web 2.0 properties, wiki sites, social bookmarking and document sharing sites, creating blog posts, press release, video, HPBL, etc. Your article should have a keyword density between 2-3%. Having a page with keywords more than this percentage can lead to penalty due to keyword stuffing.
