you always have to have more links going to your home page or your sub pages will outrank your home page.

You NEED deep links.. this tells Google that your site contains quality information.

It depends on the type of website you have. If you think, each page needs seperate SEO then there is no harm in going that way.

The real motive is to get more traffic and in my opinin, you can get more traffic if you optimize your inner pages as well.

You need balance. Google wants to see natural linking - and having too many links to just your home page is not natural. When people link, they typically link to an article - google knows this.

It is a good idea to do both - have plenty of links coming into your deep pages - and a good share to your home page, too.

To get the deep pages link juice to your home page, be sure NOT to use the word "Home" in your link back to the home page - try to work in your main keyword for the link text. Then each deep page that links to your home page (using the keyword as the link text) will pass page rank and authority to your home page. This is part of internal link structure SEO. You can "control" the "flow" of PR within your site doing stuff like this.

How any page on your site ranks, whether it's the home page or a deep page, is dependent on the SEO for the given page. Sure deeper pages could out rank a home page, given more back links, ect, but so what? Every page I can get ranked is more traffic to my site. I do my best to get every page ranked, it's just more pages in the search engines and more traffic to my site. It's sure not going to hurt another page.

You sure don't "have" to have deep links, but it can help.

One of the best ways I've found to getting back links to deeper pages has been RSS, does wonders. I don't know if it will apply to your site, but works great for me. Also more auto pilot.

For me Deep linking has worked wonders.... We need to have a mix of links: Homepage+ Deep linking. Because of my heavy promotion and all genuine contents and frequent website updation, my rankings have drastically improved. Its PR4 now..

get links to homepage with mainkeyword as anchor text. get links to internal pages that are optimized for subsequent keywords using that keyword in anchor text. That way your site will rank for multiple keywords.

I think you need to make links to your deep links because usually in search result is not home page...

there are only so many keywords your home page can rank for. I choose different keywords for my deeper links which also have matching title, url, content etc, so, it is much easier to rank for a deeper link than the homepage for the same keyword

For all starters it must be Homepage... Once you have good number of authority backlinks to that you must start your deep links.. this will help you rank for more secialized keywords and will get you very targetted tarffic

Deep links help big time in your SEO...each one of your pages within your site should have its own unique title anyways...and with a backlink or two that page could rank for that keyword term

Here's my strategy, and it works wonders. I pick about 6 entirely different phrases to optimize my homepage for. Those phrases are included in the title and body of the homepage. Then I backlink the hell out of every phrase and link to the homepage. Ex:

"Buy Widgets"
"Widgets"
"Free Widgets"
"Best Widgets"
"Large Widgets"
"Small Widgets"

Now, I research longer tail phrases (which are more narrow in scope) and I write one article/page for each phrase. I then get some minor variations on that phrase and backlink those like crazy. In the end, I get a homepage that ranks very well for 6 broad, high-traffic keywords, and a large amount of inner pages that ranks extremely well for their specific topics. And it all looks natural to Google. Ex: "Buy Blue Widgets".

Note: by "minor variations" I mean something like this. If your inner page is written around the keyphrase "buy blue widgets", I'll link to it with "buy blue widgets", "buy blue widget", "buy blue widgets free", etc.

As for me, deeplinks are more vital for creating ranking for the keywords for all webmasters and for all newbies Hompage is the most important.you should balance. Because the thing Google wants is looking for natural linking

It's easier to rank for deeper, more specific pages. Generally, the homepage is very generic. For example, the default homepage in a WP blog has just the last x amount of posts and changes frequently. It's damn near impossible to keep it ranked well for the same keyword. On the other hand it's very easy to get each specific post ranked well first. The homepage will get link juice as the deep pages become more and more popular.

I linked to my internal pages that also contains the keyword I'm targeting. It helps users to quickly zoom in to the page they want, thereby "creating a better user experience" ...

For me.. My keywords of my home page were different from my keywords of sub pages

Its better to optimize your pages which are mainly targetted at your website theme. as homepage might not impress sometime the visitors and this would might get away your conversion rates...i think this is really importnt to understand that you should optimize each of the pages from your website

Deeplinks are necessary. In order to rank for a particular keyword, a page contents needs to include these keywords. The homepage, for that matter, is not even supposed to appear as multi-purpose as the sales needs may require. Another thing is that when a user searches for a particular keyword, he or she wants to get the exact match and are unlikely to start ruffling through the whole site to - possibly - find something worthwhile.

I think there should be a balance. But if your comopany offers/targets many services/products in a single website you should opt for deep links link building.

I've got quite a few blogs with a main static page targeting my main highest volume keywords. Then after that I add the lower volume keyword articles.

I start off by getting backlinks for my main keywords on the home page and then over time add articles with long tail phrases and get backlinks for these.

Ahhh Deep Links are great - but alas .. who has the time to get all the deep links ... let alone the money sites at #1.

Geting that many quality BL's on a big site can be a real chore. But its got to be done.
