Minimum website requirements for link building

How "finished" does a website have to be before starting link building? Would it be ok with a micro site to start link building and thereafter continue to develop the site while the link building continues or should the website be at full scale before linking to it?

Can link building be done prior any website content or search engine indexation?

  • Mrmontegomery,

Technically link building can begin as soon as you have a domain name.

I would say yes, as long as there is some content that a visitor would find useful on the site, it is fine to start linking to the site. In reality you can start this process whenever you want whether there is content there or not. You won’t necessarily get penalized if there is no content on the site however if a visitor shows up and there is nothing there, that doesn’t create a very good experience.

    Best,

Thank you, yes I thought so too. But as it can take months to build a new advanced website it seems like a good idea make a pre-release and to initiate link building.

yep...i put my high PR links out there immediately...then once it hits the first page of google (within a few days), I ramp up the site build, anchor text deoptimization, internal linking, etc...I start with the absolute minimum for my niche sites...no need to waste time building a site if it wont rank...you'll know quickly if it will or not...

Ive always been under the mindset of finishing as much of the site as possible before doing link building and promotion. With Google having so many penalty filters these days you don't wanna get hit with an early Panda slap or something of that nature just because your sites not up to par just yet.

    Hi,

Yeah, I agree -- link building can start at anytime, as long as the domain name is live. It's natural! People link to parked domains all the time. Although, personally I wouldn't ever start on a client's link building until we have the site ready to launch!
