Something I don't understand as far as receiving Backlinks Naturally

There has to be some form of marketing. I can't just magically get a backlink after creating some "awesome content".

And no one really addresses that. They just say "Have awesome content. Get natural backlink." What about what's mentioned in-between that?

Quality content is bogus. You want content that people love to share.

If FB and twitter are any indication, man, quality ranks about #200 on
the shareability scale. I can't imagine anyone linking to wikipedia
crap, but millions do. And millions love it.

Anyone who says get natural backlinks by only building quality content
is full of crap.

In order to get backlinks you have to find forums or blogs that are related to what your website is about. Interact with the community and leave comments along with your signature.

The Internet has changed a lot since this attitude prevails.

I mean, really, how big of a percentage of webmasters actually link to other sources? Most people are 'microbloggers' now and social sharing machines. But do they really go around and link to great resources?

This whole line of reasoning has been outdated for awhile. Push your content through social first and foremost in 2013.

Hmmm...so at my job...I've investigated thousands of sites/BLOGS if anything from PR 2 and above that are linking back to my companies site. A lot actually with PR 4 and above.

And they're targeting specific keywords to rank certain pages too with 300,000 exact monthly searches...

Have they been helping? I would think so since these are competitive keywords that are on the first page.

I do think having a link from a high PR + relevant site with a great trust flow still plays a big role as far as ranking in the serps.

I find guest posting works well for getting something off the ground.

Put up some content that people will actually link to, and then go do about 5-10 guest posts on solid, related blogs (not article farms; real blogs). That gets you some traffic from the articles themselves and good links to get you rolling. It also introduces you to the online community of people who are talking about your topic.

To answer your question Paul. Here's my take on it. You want to create AWESOME content so that you could do some outreach to high authority websites.

Let's say you create an awesome infographic. You know how infographics have reference links at the bottom. What you can do is leverage those links. Send an email to your references or better yet, call them, and be like, "hey we made this awesome infographic about X, and we got the data/facts from your site, as a token of appreciation, we would like you to be the first to see the infographic. Please let me know what do you think of it". Chances are, your infographic will be promoted by them and you'll get a link from their websites.

My company focuses directly on guest posting because you get to absorb the traffic that other sites already have. That is the key. Yes you want great content on your site, but you want to develop amazing content for other sites. You want to find sites that people comment often and share often and there is a great sense of internet community. That's how, with content only, that you get the ball rolling, and I think that's where the statement had originated from.

Simply creating good content & waiting won't get you very far.

Thats it right there. It s not one or the other. Its both. In fact white hatters use tools too to help with it like this

I don't consider myself white or black hat I just go wherever the traffic is & build links (when I'm building links). Matter of fact, I belong to one niche forum where I have a few thousand comments & just a plain text URL in the sig. (they don't allow hyperlinks in the sig.). I defiantly participated in that niche forum for a few years because I was interested in what I was doing (niche).

There's also other niche forums where I've never been a member & the traffic has built links, one of those links sometimes delivers more traffic than my best organic keyword/traffic. Not bad considering the only effort I put into that was creating content that people can actually use.

I know I go on about niche forums, but I don't think people on this forum understand just how much targeted traffic niche forums create, traffic that's consistent for years. I see some people still saying build/blast forum links, the problem with that is it sucks for SEO & the only link they'll usually have (If it sticks) is on a forum profile that gets buried & the other real forum members would never see (two fails).

Anyways, IMO it's easier to get traffic when you hang out in the same place the target traffic hangs out. Just about every niche has at least one major forum that's very active. So build the decent site, then go hang out with people that need the content on your own site. Build it, promote it, monetize it.

There's a lot of guest posting going on - lol - that must take a lot of time and resources. Research and understand your keywords, the demographic that uses them and promote them accordingly.

Not really. I can write a good guest post in half an hour to an hour. If a site's going to be around for the long haul, it's a good investment, in my experience.

Making a large authority site, and building backlinks seems to be the best way to go.

It gets to a point to where, you can just set up a post and rank for a long tail that you want, without putting a lot of effort into it.

I don't get this whole "black hat" and "white hat" stuff.

As far as I know, i'm a marketer, and I do SEO. I build links that google likes, because then I rank in the serps. I build quality content, because my goal as a marketer is to help the customer, so that I get more customers who tell their friends to buy from me.

The only thing that I think i'd consider blackhat really is website hacking. I also don't like blog commenting spam or forum spam, 'cause that's a pain to deal with.

But I don't get this whole "black hat" "white hat" stuff. If you can use magic submitter to program it to submit to top web 2.0 sites and build up your own blog network based on web 2.0's...well do it!

I agree with you, Slin. In the end, there is no shortcut - it's just plain hard work and it is much better to stick to one site and build it up than having 20 sites which don't make any money.
However, quality content is different for anyone. The thing is "quality" is for us when we find what we are looking for, right?
So someone may find the one or other aspect helpful while another one looks for a detailed information.
How do we convince people to stick with us?
Easy, we write a lot and detailed information. Or we write articles specifically for one thing and then link to other maybe relevant articles.
I think that is the best way to go in the end - be helpful, light any aspect you can - if you devide that into 20 articles or do in one - i think that is up to you.

Having that said - personally I do not like to read 1000s of words on my computer screen. I like to read on my iPad though so that might be an option. What I'm going to say: you can't please anyone at anytime.

I've always said that content has nothing to do with Google. Content is about converting buyers into visitors (as IMers).

Google doesn't know what good content is. It relies on external signals. You can write IM poetry but without any backlinks its pointless.

I test this theory out all the time. One of my sites for a medium competition keyword ranked on page #2 without any content. It literally shot up from 100+ to 14 overnight based on the strength of my backlinks.
