On Site Linking and Link Juice

Hey Folks,

I have an almost 5 year old site and have been using white hat techniques to build SERP.

I've come to the realization that I need to do a LOT to improve my site architecture and internal linking.

I have a lot of pages that can't be easily accessed from the homepage (tens of thousands) and lots that can't be accessed at all directly.

I'm trying to figure out:

i. How to structure the entire site in a way that you can reach every page from the homepage with just a few easy clicks.

ii. Build a strategy to ensure that when the new pages that are created daily (lots of user content) that they are added automatically into an xml sitemap, to make sure it's indexed. [if indeed that's the best way to index new pages]

Does anyone have any advice, resources, suggestions?

  • Well if you use Wordpress the sitemap issue shouldn't be a problem, as there are a bunch of plugins that will update and submit your sitemap every time you add a new post/page.

    As for reaching "tens of thousands" of links from the homepage, that's a tough one. Best bet is to either only link to the REALLY important ones, the ones making you money. And maybe have a link to a "directory" of sorts where your categories are listed.

    If you don't have too many categories, add those to the homepage. You just don't want to overdo the links on your page though, as you want to direct potential customers in a certain direction and not confuse them with 1000's of clickable options

  • Thanks. We don't use WordPress. It's a custom site. Perhaps our developer can write something to update the site map? Or maybe there's custom software out there?

  • You can see shortest navigation click depth and link juice scores for all page URLs with tools like A1 Website Analyzer. You can also find many tools for creating sitemaps. However, even if you can create a big HTML sitemap (or one that spans multiple pages) to have link juice flow to them, I would still suggest you also make sure your internal link structure gives some link juice to all your important pages. (And make sure you duplicate / thin content ones have as little as possible.)
