What is the best SEO strategy for a future authority site?

I would love to know everyone's opinion on the best way to move forward with building an authority site in any niche really.

Use an example of a niche, as I don't want to delve into what I'm aiming for in my particular niche, just what I'm generally going to do, to build a large community/authority site.

What I would like to know most is - what is the best content strategy to use for a future authority site?

Any other suggestions and tips would be great.

Look forward to thoughts.
Aaron.

For authority niches I would recommend going with a silo setup. I would start by going with a brandable domain name.

For the homepage I would target a broader niche keyword. Then you go one level down and create pages targeting so-called "fast ranker keywords". Think of them as categories that you can rank for easier than your main keyword. Go one level down again and target even less competitive keywords inside each category.

If I were to visualize the process, it would look like this (randomly made up keywords):

Level 0 - main keyword - chihuahua training
Level 1 - fast rankers - chihuahua training books - chihuahua trainer
Level 2 - less comp kwds - john doe's bestselling chihuahua book - chihuahua trainer orlando

I would then link level 0 to level 1, then level 1 to level 2, and then level 2 back to level 0. This way the juice will flow down from the homepage.

Content-wise it would depend on the niche. In the example above, I would review books on chihuahua training. Or make a list of chihuahua trainers in orlando, maybe even contact one in particular to promote or interview. You could also write how-to's or "5 Must Have Tools to Train Your Chihuahua Puppy"-style posts.

    Hope that helped a bit

    Cheers
    Pat

Wonderful theory Pat, thank you for that. I need to somehow get my head round what you said with the tiers lol.

Np I read some stuff a while back by Paulie Ciara called "The Link Pyramid". It shows you a bottom-up approach to silo building. Interlinking the level 2 with each other and then linking upwards. See if you can track it down, could definitely help!

Thanks again I have heard of a link pyramid, though thought they were no good in today's penguin/panda shenanigans.

You probably read about a back link pyramid, here he talks about internal linking structures.

Back link pyramids can still be good as long as you maintain quality in each tier.

The best strategy right now is to get other bloggers and writers in your niche to contribute on your site...even if it means you have to pay them for the article.

Its an investment that will not only give your site instant authority by leeching off other authors, but these same authors are likely to post status updates, tweets and backlinks to 'show off' their work on your site.

I think the BEST way to start a niche authority site is to begin by finding contributors and having a budget set aside for it.

I understand completely what your saying. Though many will write just for a backlink.

I agree, most of them will write for a backlink, which makes it even sweeter of a strategy. And if you pay the really high profile ones in your niche, you are pretty much guaranteed that they will link back to your site and/or socialize about it on the web.

The best strategy is to forget about SEO.

Find out what your audience wants, give it to them.

Find out what they want next, give it to them.

    Rinse and repeat

        Easy, self promotion without keywords.

My very first site I ever built 6 years ago had niche forum traffic lined up before I ever thought about building the site & I defiantly didn't care about SEO at the time. Within a week or two I was up to around 3,000 unique traffic & still didn't care about SEO (at the time). I SEO for the last few years because it's additional free traffic, not because it's the only traffic.

Google's only a fraction of the traffic on the net.

      Pretty much this.

The only thing I'd add to that is you need to promote the hell out of your content or else you won't have much of an audience to give it to.

No matter what niche you're in there's probably already an insane amount of great stuff out there. Simply posting awesome stuff on it's own isn't enough: you need to do the legwork and get your stuff noticed.

Since this is what I specialize in, I am a bit biased. Guest blogging is the way to go, or better yet, hire guest blogging companies to get the job done for you. You see, there are many great sites out there that have great content, great links, everything, but the community is still missing.

I have read countless accounts about people who could talk the talk but weren't walking the walk, and they about quit running their sites. The problem was nobody knew who they were. After a good chunk of guest posts leading people in the same niche back to their site, a community of followers would start to build and the site would become an authority site.

To do guest blogging well, you have to pair it with social marketing. Twitter is the way to go. If you have media or pictures, go for pinterest. I'm not a fan of Facebook even though I use it because I don't want a gap there.

I like writing so this might go against what others suggest, but I recommend choosing a topic you enjoy writing about or can learn to enjoy and just start writing articles. I usually wait a week or two and then see what Google searches I am being found for (using my server stats and Google Analytics) and then I start new articles based off the search terms people are finding me for.

I then go to forums in my niche and see what people are talking about. Look for the threads with a lot of views, but not a lot of posts. That is usually an indicator that there is interest in the topic but no one on the forum could answer it.

Beyond that, experiment. I have a separate Blogger account that I use to only do experiments with in the SERPs.

As will building an authority site.
I would suggest paying or learning how to implement proper link structuring on-site. Before even touching on content or off-page SEO.

An authority site is going to cost you some nice $$$ if your outsourcing the content creation, no matter what way you look at it.
For every page you create. You will need to create more to feed them authority. Like a massive multiplier to infinity.

      1
      2
      4
      8
      16
      32
      64
      128
      256
      512

2 Push pages for every one created adds up real quick. Now imagine you did that per Category. And had 10 main Categories.

In short. If you want the Auth site, you need the BOSS monies too. Or 24 hours spare time every day to write content.

I understand what your saying, but Rome wasn't built in a day. If I continue to write content everyday, along with guest posting and hiring writers as I go along then the content will build up over time. You can get an authority site in a couple of months, unless you were hiring loads of writers to do all the content.

But that's not an authority site then, that's just a site with content created to bulk it up. You would have to select every article title carefully, and that just ain't going to work.

I'm on the same path as you with 2 sites right now. And I'm outsourcing most of the content creation.
One site has 10 Cats. And I'm at the 160 article push stage on it already.

Believe me when I tell you. I am KW researching the crap out of every single article that goes up. Because if I put a load of filler junk up there. I will not rank and bank on the path to Authority.
And Damn I'll go broke fairly quickly with it.

Thank mate, but SEO team of 8 here behind me.
More to the point KW research is something I would never recommend someone should outsource. Unless your knocking up some crappy 5 page built for Adsense site.

Going for Authority, you really need to bury yourself in the related Market. Even if your not initially interested in it.
So when new developments/news/products or whatever appear. Your on top of the trend and can hit them asap.

Handing that sort of responsibility over to some Injens just won't compete.
      Thats just my opinion anyway.

Its funny how people say FORGET SEO...thats an utter joke!

Are you NOT going to identify high traffic keywords in your niche, and atleast 'naturally' incorporate them into your articles and title tags?

Are you NOT going to approach other relevant sites/bloggers in your niche, and ask them to 'mention' your website to their audience?

Aren't you going to participate in niche forums with the hope of driving traffic back to your site?

How about posting status updates, retweets and participating on other Fanpages and Facebook Groups for traffic?

Doing all of the above, in a nutshell, will build you BACKLINKS...the core of SEO.

Heck, in addition to the above, I would do what a lot of the multi-million dollar companies in the most cut-throat industries are doing...and that is to go out and buy a bunch of high PR links (in a discrete manner ofcourse).

I'm sick of this stupid 'white hat kiss Google's butt' BS that propogates from Matt Cutt's cronies...

Promotion is something every marketer has a right to do, and that includes promotion to drive search engine rankings...if the content is good and people find value in it, Google can stuff that 'unnatural linking' crap in the same hole that it came out of.

For any computer algorithm trying to catch 'unnatural' linking, there's an army of human beings that can figure out how game it and make it look natural.

Power to the people and to the marketer...not to Google's multi-billion dollar Adwords cashcow that they try to push down everyone's throat!
