Review my startup: AdTech: Ad Revenue optimization

Hi,

I'm Ankit, a new member @ the forum and with this post, I look forward to get some feedback from fellow webmasters about my startup.

Just to make sure that it does not sound like self-promotion, I will not provide a link to the website or name of the website. I am only looking for a discussion/feedback on the business idea.

The product which I am building is aimed at webmasters and publishers who run advertisements on their websites. The MVP contains many features such as:
  • A/B test different ad sizes and placements to see which design gets you higher CTR on your ads (and revenues!)
  • Compare different Ad networks (CPC, CPM) and see which one is paying you more.
  • Create Ad variations (only for adsense at the moment) - ever noticed adsense lets you change the colors in the text ads? or ever thought of comparing text ads with image-only ads to see which pays better? Do you know you can increase CTR of ads by up to 75% just by changing the colors of these text ads, we let you do that automatically, test 1000s of variations and measure which ones are performing best.
  • Heatmaps, Clickmaps and Scrollmaps.

In short, it would help you make more money from your current website.

I would be really glad to see some feedback on this:
  1. If you liked the features and think it could be a good tool for publishers.
  2. Feature or any suggestions
  3. Questions

    Hi Ankit,

I think your product definitely has its place. There are a lot of studies showing optimal positioning of ads on the website. But each site is different, so A/B testing is definitely a good value proposition.

There are bunch of wordpress themes that do this testing for you, so there's definitely a market. I like the idea of changing colors, heat-, click- and scrollmaps, too.

My question is how would you differentiate yourself from other similar products available on the market (competitive advantage)?

A suggestion I have is to take the Design Thinking approach. It's an iterative cycle that is a breading ground for innovation. It usually looks like this:

Define the problem - Needfinding - Brainstorming - Testing - Prototyping - then restart the process and after a few iterations you will have a winning product.

Just Google for more info, or you can write me too!

    Cheers
    Pat

      Hey Pat,

Thanks a lot for your reply. Actually, from the detailed market study which I did, most of the A/B testing tools which exist today, are for advertisers and conversion rate optimization; not for publishers.

      My product has:
      • a visual editor to move and rearrange ads (not a unique feature though)
      • Option to change Ad sizes (from the editor itself: No one does this)
      • Ability to track Ad clicks on each ad unit (again, no a/b testing tool does this: as its a policy violation, we on the other hand have a workaround)
      • Support for multiple networks when testing (again no tool supports this)
      • Create design variations for adsense units automatically from within the tool (we feel this is a game changer; we've seen webmasters increase revenues drastically with this)
      • We are also thinking to introduce something like continuous website optimization, in which ad position/placement/design/size/etc variations would be created automatically via machine learning and this would be something like an auto-pilot for your website to maximize ad revenues.

and thanks a ton for sharing the Design Thinking approach.

    Hey Ankit,

No problem! It's actually something I picked up at university, and thought it suits your product quite well. Especially, since it would require quite a bit of tweaking and rapid prototyping. Very exciting stuff!

I know the market for publishers too little (only the few wordpress themes I used), but if I'm allowed an educated guess, I think you have a good competitive advantage.

I like the approach where you satisfy the customer's need every step of the way. It seems like you have that down.
