Domain Names and SEO

Hi
I posted this on the main forum discussion page, but with hindsight this area may be more appropriate.
Apologies to any who are reading for the second time......
I'm a new member here, and my head is already spinning from the information and discussions posted here (and I haven't even joined the War Room yet!).
The IM market is relatively new to me (my background is predominantly financial markets) and whilst I don't wish to plague people with questions, there are occasionally points which I haven't so far been able to find answers to by searching and reading.
One question, which is a sort of a leading-edge issue, is whether my choice of a domain name for my new project is going to be of critical importance due to SEO considerations etc, or actually not so important as that isn't how SEO works?
Any thoughts gratefully received.
Thanks.
Mark
PS.... Has anyone come across 'front-running' by domain registration companies? I've searched for names on a couple of occasions, and both times the name I was considering was initially available, and then a day later mysteriously became unavailable BUT was offered for sale to me for a $1k.

  • As today exact match domains have lost a lot of it's power and overall it's always a better thing to focus on branding instead. Pick up something catchy and easy to remember it looks far more legit.

About the 'front runinning' I've heard about this before but never happened to me personally. I stick with godaddy, never had any problems.

    • That's helped clear that up for me.
      Thanks for your answer.
  • Google still puts important weight in your domain name, although a little less than in the past. Exact domain match is still a valuable tactic.

For example, in local search marketing, using the name of the town plus the type of business is still a good approach, such as syracusedrycleaners.com

    • I forwarded an address and Google didn't like that. Make sure your url and registration match when possible.

Sign up at Overview ? Submit your content ? Google for a lot of valuable information straight from Google.
    • Thanks, Thomas. That's helpful, although as I'm going for a 'global' niche, it's a bit trickier.
    • Thank you, Sowens.
When you say you 'forwarded an address', what do you mean?
