Changing domains on AdWords account

Question: I used to run a certain site on AdWords, multiple campaigns, it worked great, i.e. spending around ~$100K/month.
The client purchased a new domain, transferred all content from old to new, so basically, the only thing that changed is the url.
I didn't change the links on AdWords existing campaigns/ad groups, started new campaigns/ad groups, and performance dropped significantly.
What could be the explanation?
Could it be that the new domain has less natural rankings in SERPs?
Please tell me if you've had exact/similar type of situation and if you have an insight into this.
