What still works after penguin 2.0?

Contextual links from niche relevant content
Resource links
Blogroll links from somewhat relevant sources
High PR private network
Links from donations/testimonials
Guest blogging

etc... All the basic things that worked in 2004, still work now. People tend to over complicate things, go with the automated tools, crappy directories, blog comments etc... This is not a long-term strategy.

When I build links, I always think it's 2020 and Google has become yber-mega-giga-smart and it's almost impossible to RANK new sites. That's why I'm picking my links very carefully so I could survive penguin 9.0 as well

Maybe I'm too paranoia, but that's just me.

Exactly this.

There was a brief period (2006-2012) when spam performed better than white hat links.

That era has died.

Now it's time to kick it old school and start building links like it's 1999.

That's a solid way to go about in my book too. Unless you are purposely going for crash and burn, smash and grab, short term success, I think it is not paranoid, but rather smart.

It's been about 12 hours since the update started rolling out. No one can tell you what "works" because no one has had an opportunity to fully digest the data.

Google itself has put up a spam notification request so it can adjust the update.

None of this is helpful at all because it fails to consider the evaluation of the link source.

For instance, guest blogging on a spammed, blackhat website that is selling links and distributing child porn while infecting your computer with a virus probably isn't a place where you want a backlink.

Actually, all of his suggestions are pretty sound techniques. He didn't have to add "but not from child porn sites" to each suggestion. That's pretty much implied. It should be obvious to anyone doing SEO that you don't want to go after backlinks from gambling/porn/etc sites. A person shouldn't have to mention that with every post.

I've never once used blog commenting as a means to boost ranking, so Im no expert, but if I had to make a logical guess, its not that effective...

blog comments on relevant blogs might still help a little, but don't use automated blog comments, these will get you a penalty

From my experience I have found this - (After checking lot of sites)

What Works -

1. Links from related and good content - Web2.0, Blog networks
2. Social signal is very important
3. Google is giving more priority to authority sites. I can see lot of authority sites ranking without any links at all.

What is not working -

1. Blog comments. I have seen drop on pages for which have links from blog comments.
2. If you do tiered links, make sure you take extra care and use lot of LSI keywords. It still works if we do correctly.

Obviously, there are lot of exception too. Here I am sharing whatever I have found so far. If we build good site, I don't think there is anything to worry about.

i have used only articles unique 500 keywords + focused on user on real private networks posted by admin( this is not guest posting !!!!)

I have build real social signals on those articles and have no problems with Penguin 2.0

Do it the same!!

Exactly, that combo is enough and also works without the social signals so no idea why people have so many issue's. Oh well I know why cause most people are still not prepared to spend money to make money.

I agree with John here, we here at LinkFool have from the beginning implemented only white hat techniques and thats what should always be done.

Google created links as a determining factor of where you rank, how you get those links is by people visiting your site and finding the information helpful. If you have a website about Airplanes do you think a link from a site about Dog food is going to help or that it's going to look natural? No, think naturally everyone and stay positive, its not the first time Google has released an update and it won't be the last
