Domain Extensions

Hi, what are peoples opinions on domain extensions, is it the case that .co.uk/.com are the best or does it really matter?? Is a .uk.net or a .uk.com domain still worth the same as a straight .com or .co.uk? Is it more about the content than the domain as I would suspect? Do search engines treat them all the same?

Any thoughts on this?

    • I don't mean in monetary terms, I mean in terms of how the Search engines rank you. Does a .uk.net hold as much authority as a .co.uk or .com for example?
    • Hopefully there are Buyers (plural) out there!
      Gain a relationship with your buyers, IMO. Ask questions! See where the buyer is coming from. Use Surveys, Don't be afraid to tell them "Sorry price is firm" - see where they are and if they come back. Gotta have some cajones and market the domains well! Sweeten the pot as they say. I've already had 1 domain that I was scoffed at and then BAM next day I sold it for 15x the purchase amount!

      Don't lie and say "I have higher offers..." else you've cornered yourself and are the P-I-G.

    In general terms, ranking any TLD is going to be the same in the eyes of search engines. The only area that will be different is with localized results. So if you are trying to rank in the U.S. for products/services using the .tk domain for example, you will not have as much success as if you had a more universal TLD such as a .com, .net or .org.

    That being said, Google is getting better at recognizing when any kind of website might be relevant to a searcher’s query. Check out this video by Matt Cutts talking about .com’s ranking on google.co.uk,

    • Looks like .com is the way to go. I live in Colorado and will be doing a bit more of the .CO's but that's only because that's relevant to my people here. I also know that Matt Cutts has approved the geo-targeting for this ccTLD/gTLD.

      My strategy is to get 4 decent .co's to every one premium .com ($xxx) which will head up my niche sets. Idea will be able to sell all 5 of these to someone to use or individually - we will have to see!

      Also I have subscribed and started cyber-stalking Gene P. Hope he is OKAY with that. He seems to know what he's talking about and has no BS to cut through.
