Ranking a .wordpress.com site

Hi all!
I was just wondering how hard is it to rank a blog that still has the .wordpres.com suffix? Would it look better to the search engines if I paid to get rid of the .wordpress.com? Thanks for your help!

  • Why would you rank someone's else propriety? Get your own domain , you can get it cheap as 2$ on godaddy

    • It's really difficult to rank a sub-domain...you can get traffic but getting a rank is very difficult now..particularly at this time of Penguin 2.0

    • Sorry, I just would like to ask you how to own a domain for $2.00?!? The cheapest price I paid was $7.50 (There is no such a big difference and this is not a problem for me, but I am just curious...)

      If you want to rank a .wordpress.com, then there is no difference between the normal SEO (if you own .com domain), the only thing you will have more is the chance to own a domain with a keyword (if the same domain.com is already registered!)
  • The fact is you'll never know what will happen tomorow with those blogs. Why investing your time and money (content+seo) when you don't have full control on those proprieties? They could go mad one day and delete your blog or other random crap that could screw you and your hard work over. Domains are cheap , if you look good enough you can find some super cheap hosting too as you don't need too much at all with a single site.

    • ^ Agreed. You can find a coupon for $1.99 or $.99 cent domains in five minutes.

      Google may not care whether the site is a sub domain or not but I find real humans take your site a lot more seriously if it's not a blogger or WordPress.com.

      Plus I thought the WordPress.com sub domains don't even let you monetize the website?!?
  • I would definitely not try and rank a wordpress.com site if I were you. Part of my SEO process for ranking low competition affiliate sites is to report blogger and wordpress.com affiliate pages that rank above my site (affiliate sites is against the terms of service for wordpress.com and blogger) , and they all get removed within 24 hours. It's much safer to have your own domain.
  • You seem to be giving wordpress an SEO advantage. It's always better that you own a domain.
  • I recommend that you don't waste your time with WordPress.com. I recommend using Blogger or paid hosting and WordPress.org over using WordPress.com.
  • From my experience I noticed that .worpress.com websites get a good position in Google's results! For example, if you are targeting a niche via the blog name, a dedicated article (with relevant title, anchor text and alt attribute for an inserted image), and bookmark it on top 5 social bookmarking websites, then you have all chances to get this website on second or third page of Google.
  • I haven't seen any big difference between ranking a site that is a wordpress subdomain or on its own domain. But, it's certainly better to pay the few bucks for your own domain for control purposes. If you like wordpress and want to stick with it, then you can of course install wordpress on your own .com domain.
