Paid: ahrefs & majestic seo , you can analyze backlinks, anchor text distribution etc etc.
Free: Backlinks Checker Tool - Backlink Watch , limited data and full of adds

Rank tracking

Paid: serpbook.com , I use this one personally. Easy to use , custom reports and cheap enough.
Free: rankcheckerace.com this one is the most accurate until now (personal experience) and it has many nice features which are always free.

Market Samurai is the best for me to check keywords (paid), free maybe Google Analytics and BackLinkWatch... I don't use many free or paid SEO softwares, because I prefer doing it myself!

It is true that tools are not good in SEO as it produce automated works, yet, there are plenty of tools which would help a lot, just make sure that you are not doing link building using any tool, but you can use those tools to research data for link building, keyword research, competition, checking errors of your site.

Keyword Research: The good old Google keyword tool and some ingenuity

Linkbuilding automation: SENuke (expensive), Ultimate Demon (cheaper)

Competitive Analysis: SEOQuake plugin (free)

Link Profile Analysis: Majestic (very good and cheaper than OSE or Ahrefs) the free accounts are very good too.

I only really use Market Samurai to look at competing site's on page optimization.

Ahrefs is better for checking backlinks but it doesn't do the keyword ranking or have any of the other pretty suite tools moz offers.

I got pre-installed seo tools with my Offshore seo vps and those really awesome. So, I think paid is great but also there is some free tools that works good but paid tools has some extra ordinary power that free didn't contain.

semrush is the best paid tool in paid ....it has a monthly billing and it is very easy to use and gives the accurate data than most of the other tools ... so at least try it a month and see the difference ....

Paid: I think ahrefs is best. Although there are so many available, I don't think anyone can tell for sure which is better than the next one..

Free: I'd say Google Webmaster Tools. It's useful for checking a lot of things, backlinks & keywords people looked for to find your page included.

I think the best tool is one that you know how to use and are really comfortable with. A paid tool is going to give you more insight for sure.

For Backlinks:
I've used a lot of tools but for backlinks I use Majestic.com. I understand it's metrics in relation to how strong backlinks are. When I look at Moz I'm a little lost because I haven't used it as much so it all depends on what you know. Pick one that people recommend and really learn how to use it.

Besides thinking my own tools in signature

you may also have to look into if you prefer web, OS X or Windows tools. Also many "free" tools actually have a premium/subscription mode that can end up being quite expensive / comparatively more expensive. Your needs will also depend on if you do SEO for clients or just a few small websites of your own.
