I was doing some keyword research when I came across a phrase whose top 10 was full of people who had clearly optimized for it and had pr5+ and unthinkable amounts of links when i noticed the site in the number 5 position was held with a low-low pr and very few links.

Here's the question: would you try to get that spot? Number 5 is a sitting duck.

    Hi llfleming,

Based on your post I would say that you have some misconceptions about how web pages are ranked. It's not the number of links that count, it's the quality of those links. While quality sites often have higher PageRank, PR is NOT a reliable indicator of quality, relevant traffic is a much better indicator.

If you can outrank #5 then position 6 -10 will be even easier to outrank.

Since there are many keywords to choose from, you need to compare the value of the traffic you might expect vs. the effort to achieve the ranking. There are many keywords that are easy to rank for, but why bother if nobody ever searches that keyword.
