Using Directories

I've been slowly conducting an SEO campaign (it's a side project) for a site of mine. So far, I've primarily focused on guest posting, as I personally have seen excellent results from that in the past (and continue to), with a couple of Web 2.0s. In order to diversify my links, I have also started using social media and commenting on a few blogs I already read (when appropriate, not spamming).

I'm considering using web directories as another source of backlinks. I realize the benefit will be minimal. At the very least, though, it will get me some backlinks that are not on blogs.

I have a few questions:

1. As long as I stick with web directories that have a PR 1+, Google should not penalize my links, right? They wouldn't give a penalized site PR, I'm thinking.

2. I've seen a few lists of around 100 web directories. Does anyone have a huge (1000s) list that I can use over time. I'm looking for a list to go through throughout the next year or so.

3. How do you use web directory backlinks in your SEO strategy?

4. Am I missing anything? Any other thoughts?

  • 1. Google wouldn't penalize you they just wouldn't give that link much value.

    2. I have never came across a list with 1000s of directories. In my opinion if someone was taking the time to come up with a list like that, they are probably in the process of building a directory submission software and wouldn't share that list.

    3. I only submit to directories that have PR 4 or higher. There are so many web directories out there I doubt Google would even consider giving a backlink any value from a low PR directory. This is just my opinion though, I have no facts to back it up.

    4. It sounds like your ahead of the game as most people are out spamming every blog, forum, directory they can get their hands on. They will end up ahead of you for a short amount of time until Google steps in. Building quality backlinks and having original, high quality content will almost always keep you out of harms way from Google algo changes.

  • You link probably won't go on a PR page unless you pay. Seen a lot of directories lately that have low obl's with high page rank pages. But there buying links from major pr pages. So even if you do pay, that pr page may not last long cause google will penalize them. So it just becomes a waste of money.
