Hi,

It used to be the case for the on-site SEO people would recommend putting it in title, H1, picture file name, alt tag, internal link and a certain keyword density in the body of the text.

Is this still the case or is all this looked on as a bit overkill/spammy and potentially a negative?

What are other people finding works best?

Thanks,
Dan

If you have a big number of pages on your website avoid over optimizing your internal anchor text. Everything else is pretty much the same as always.

Everything you've mentioned there except i don't bother about keyword density anymore. I simply write for the reader and not the search engines. The good quality backlinks do the rest!

I have my main keyword on every single page (anchor-text once per page) of multiple same niche sites (3 sites, around 2,500 pages total). I've owned that main keyword in the SERPs for a few years.

The key with anything SEO related is doing things in moderation, some people just don't know when to tone it down (per page).

After Penguin 2.0, we have noticed clients with proper on-page setup are light years ahead of those that don't have proper setup.

You've got to make sure keyword density is right, tags, titles, headers etc are properly optimized.

Lastly, you've got to make sure you are doing reputable and clean SEO for the site, or hiring someone to do that for you. In my mind that was the hardest thing when starting out - finding the best SEO provider for link building purposes.

You should still pay attention to KEYWORD DENSITY!!! Don't forget it.. Title and description should be unique if you have time for EVERY page and alt and title tags for images and links are still so important.. The update will NOT change anything for ON-PAGE SEO, you still need to build your website NOT only for people, but also for Search Engines!

Keyword density is a myth. It doesn't exist. I have lots of sites where I haven't bothered with Keyword ratios and they rank well. I'm even outranking my competitors who have blatantly spammed their site with the keyword. The magic is down to your backlinks.

Content should always please your readers - not the search engines.
