Contacting Related Sites for Links

Hi,
Do people have much success in e-mailing similar sites asking to rent links on their home pages and what sort of prices do people pay?
I know direct competitors aren't likely to give you a link, but using fitness as an example,iIf you had a site selling fitness equipment, a fitness blog wouldn't be a direct competitor but a backlink from them could be pretty useful if only for the purpose of SEO rather than people clicking it directly.
I'm thinking something like a text link on a a PR3 page. If the links purpose is solely for SEO then there doesn't seem any point in buying something like a banner.
