International SEO - Does Using a Geo-Targeted Host Matter?

Hey Guys, I just bought a .co.uk domain and I want to set-up a website for it but I'm a little reluctant.

Currently I have two hosting companies in the US a fast VPS for my tracking and a shared host w/ hostgator for websites that I don't want people who see my tracking link to know about .

Should I host the .co.uk on a third host in the UK? I know in the past that mattered but I'm seeing some conflicting info from various google reps in google groups and Matt Cutts about the topic.

I'm wondering about the real world... for those of you that have websites in other countries have you seen penalties for hosting websites outside of them? Or are any of you doing this and still ranking well?

Based on the sites I've built and ranked, the host location is not important so long as you use Google Webmaster tools to tell Google the location that you are targeting. I believe it also helps to have a page detailing the business street address and a link to a Google Places entry.

Well that is good news I didn't really want to deal w/ another hosting company if I didn't have to. Appreciate the screenshot too, that helps a lot!

Well, if you use host according to location then it is good otherwise there is not much problem, Google would decide ranking from your content.. and it is the main factor for deciding ranking that is your site content, you should focus on provide quality, user-friendly content first.
