Directory websites

I've read its in violation of google t&cs to sell links and pass on pr juice, so what about business directories that are useful?

We know about the major ones like yell, but what about smaller ones that target a local area such as www arrangingafuneral dot co dot uk

I'm considering launching a directory similar to that above, but in a different niche, are they compliant with googles t&cs? In order for them to hold value and people to pay to list on them they have to be ranking in the serps and getting decent levels of traffic already don't they?

The reason I ask is I have a decent number of web design clients already who pay monthly, there all small businesses, considering launching a directory providing them all a free 12 month listing to get the directory populated with businesses, then its just a case of promoting the site in the serps and in yr2 hopefully start to generate revenue

  • First of all - Google Schooogle.

    #B - Is there a newspaper in your town that has banner ads to businesses? Do they just give those away?

    And 3rd - I've got a couple of local sites that are doing just fine, thank you. They each have a 'directory', which is in reality a page for each business that joins. That page includes their logo, address, a link if they have one, pictures and information about their business.

    Each site also includes a blog which provides information about the area, events and businesses.

    Like I said...I'm doing fine...

    I now your doing fine now but with google you know you don't want to be in a grey area you need a solid business model as they can just hit you with an algo update or a report from another competitor and your business is gone!

    How did you initially get your directory sites going? Did you initially provide free listings to give the sites some value so that users would come and use the site. And traffic would build up?
  • Directories are different things, and they are allowed, lots of quality sites are also using directories, if they are related to their niche, high pr. etc.
