From my experience there is not just one side to SEO. There are many elements to be considered depending on your goals. I'd say that the biggest difference between the 2 is first, they are not to be compared. They are to be used together. Secondly, a lot of people throw around terms that are simply made up. For example, take the term "backlink", is actually "linkback" and there 3 types, not just the one that everybody focuses on (refback). Do a search for the term "linkback" on wikipedia and you will see. With that being said, SEO is SEO and how you go about doing it depends on your goals. Take a look at the following video. I know what's what when it comes to SEO and I'd be glad to help anyone out.

Here we have a prime example of a non-responsive response. He tells us that the first difference is that you're not to talk about the difference. Then, he says that SEO is SEO. After some rant about how everyone should say backlink his way or else their vernacular is wrong. He posts an 11 view video that rambles for over five minutes, of which I have no patience for after hearing his 2 purported explanations that made absolutely zero sense.

Any others want to take a shot at this?

Wow, that is clearly a biased view and you are paying no attention to the video and the points that I make which illustrate what I am talking about. Let break this down Counselor, what are you ranking for and can you show how much traffic you are getting from it in real time like right now? I can. I am not trying to bring any negativity to the table here. Your response was childish. Just because your neurons don't fire off in a fine a enough sequence to understand my post does not mean it's crap and won't help anybody. The question asked can be considered a loaded one to anyone that knows and can effectively deploy and type of powerful seo. I answered based on my experience gave real time proof of what my point.

Then you ask if anyone else wants to "take a shot at this" as if you are accomplishing something. Please grow up "Counselor".

Where are you in the search engines "Counselor"? Where's your business? What's really real?

Here I am trying to help you out and you snap because you are trying to approach SEO with an idea that is empty. When it comes tot SEO there is no difference between the 2 things you asked because when you ask for a difference, most often times people are looking for a comparison and you can't compare the 2 when both are needed for any effective SEO strategy.

I said nothing about being a youtube guru or any guru for that matter but if you are looking for proof that I know what I am talking about, my business did this promotion: Yarn Bombing - Ishknits Yarn Bombing inspires little Boy - YouTube just recently. I guess you could say that I know how to market on YouTube also. As for the the "non searched for term" that site gets 700+ new unique visitors every day from SEO and it has helped to propel my business to the tune of more than $100k each month.

Empty idea? Snapping? Approach SEO? I asked a question. You still haven't answered, btw.

Unless we copy and paste the "there is no difference" part of your answer..? Is that your final answer?

            1. You still haven't answered the question.
            2. Your video shows you ranking for an unsearched term for the exact term that is in the title tag. Not impressive. Most of your videos have less than 5 views. How are you a YouTube SEO guru?

My response addressed your response. Your response insulted me personally, and never addressed any of the points I raised. I don't need to stoop to your level. Come back with a one-liner and we'll forgive you for wasting our time with endless words that have no application to the question.

Anyone want to respond to the question without dragging a person into the discussion? In a court of law this ad hominem approach to the issue is known as a violation of the golden rule. It is a distraction set up to point out counsel's spelling error, improperly tied shoelaces, bad hairstyle, etc. It's not helpful in determining a resolution to the issue.

The issue here is: what is the difference between off page SEO, and backlinking?

Answer: There is no difference between the 2. It would be like asking what is the difference between a car and a boat. "Backlinks" are a PART of off page SEO. Off page SEO encompasses more that just backlinks and involves other SEO elements such as keyword placement in posts that designed to help your rankings.

      Does this help?

So a car is part of a boat?

Ok so backlinking is part of SEO, along with keyword placement in posts. That makes more sense than your car/boat analogy. Now, the reason why my question is so great is because once you started actually trying to answer it, we're getting somewhere. What else besides backlinking is involved? And what do you mean by "keyword placement in posts"? What posts? Forums? On-site? Blog? Social Media?

I have a video that can show you exactly what you are looking for. I sell it, but I will give you access for free. What is your gmail addy so that I give you permission to view it on youtube?

And yes, posts on several types of sites, all of the types that you mentioned. There are many WSOs here that explain and give training on what you are looking to learn. It would help if you learned the basics and fundamentals of SEO or if you were to ask what are the fundamentals. You can also find plenty of information on google and youtube.

Backlinking = getting a link back to your website
Off Page SEO = Backlinking, citations, cocitations of your website, sometimes creating your own syndication network, etc.

Backlinking is a part of your off page SEO but your off page SEO can include much more than just backlinking.
