HOw to get links when industry doesn't allow it

I've done pretty well with my limited knowledge of SEO over the years. But I have few links except ones to/from sites I own. Even some 2.0 sites I link to or link from them back to a money site. (But even the 2.0 sites, such as Weebly sites, I get sales from those because I have my contact info there.) I have dozens of sites and I have not overdone linking to sites I own. At least, I don't think I have because I am still getting good page rank. I try to write good content and write the keyword phrases naturally.

Problem is that my niche is very narrow and the only sites and blogs that I know of that are not my competitors will not allow me to link to my site from theirs. And, obviously, my competitors are not going to allow me to link. So, how can I get links? Do they have to relevant, within-my-industry links? Can I buy links?

You could just make your own networks. It's always the safest long term strategy anyway. Depending on other people properties for anything. Is always going to end in tears.

I have heard that building own network for building backlinks is not a good choice now. Though I am not really sure.:confused:

The concept of relevance is difficult and I do not believe it is as important as some people state.

If you try hard enough you may find relevant link opportunities in related industries.

I would argue all of the following are relevant:

plumber linking to a hardware store
car yard linking to an insurance company
doctor linking to a wheel chair company
web designer linking to a printing company
wedding planner linking to a limo hire company
rubber glove company linking to an airport body scanner company
