Rank Tracking: Is Google.com the same with Google US?

I've been tracking keywords of my site and a few clients and used tools like Link Assistant Rank Tracker, CuteRank, SEOBook Rank Tracker, ASEOPS Rank Checker and WebCEO Rank Tracker but recently I needed to switch to some other tools because of some inconsistency and I think inaccuracy. Recently, I looked upon Advanced Web Ranking because I've read some good reviews and when I used it , it's the first time I saw that there's a different option for Google.com and Google US because I thought it was just the same :confused: I never saw this option before in the previous tools I've tried (because Google.com is treated as Google US in those tools) and I think Advanced Web Ranking treat them as really different because it shows different results for Google.com and Google.com(US). Are they really different in the first place?

I then went trying Web-based rank tracking and started out with SERPBook and the same as the previous tools I used, Google.com is treated as Google US. Then I tried SERPFox ( I am trying to compare data provided by all tools I've tried) and, same as AWR, it has an option for Google.com and Google US separately BUT the difference is it presents a unified data for Google.com and Google.com(US) which may imply that Google.com is also Google.com(US) for SERPFox. So the big question now, is Google.com the same with Google.com (US) in rank tracking? Are there any other tools that treat Google.com and Google.com (US) differently? I am confused actually.

  • Update: SERPFox now displays different results for Google.com and Google US. Totally confused now.

    • The difference between google.com and google.com (US) should be the location of the server that is checking / querying google.com
      For example, checking the keyword "Car Rental" in google.com from a US IP address will have different results rather than checking the keyword from Europe IP address.
      In Rank Ranger you have an option to choose between google.com (Global), meaning the results will be checked from an IP address outside of US, and google.com (USA) meaning the results will be checked from an IP within US.
  • interesting. I checked a few of my keywords just now and all of them show the same ranking for google.com and google.us - none of them showed any different data so i guess they're treated as the same.

    I believe google.com results pure are an elusion to a great extent. When serving users with search results, Google takes a variety of factors into account and a location is one of them.

    With that in mind, I don't see a reason to chase google.com (no location) rankings. They are not a real thing, i.e. they'll be no customers of yours who'll actually see them.

    Rank tracking with real users in mind might be a more robust approach. Choosing a local search engine is just the first step. You can go further and track personalized Google results.


    Thus, there's a location anyway! It's not about US or non-US: in the case described here google.com (Global) can be checked from a UK IP or a Brasilian IP, as both are outside the US. The results might vary considerably.

  • Yes, they both are different. They both uses different data servers to generate results and thus it is quite sure that you are going to see different results on both of them..
  • Yes, there is sure going to difference between the rankings on these two search engines. Seems their dataservers are quite different
  • So its better to track with Google.com(US) than Google.com?

    • I believe so. If your potential customers are in the US, track Google.com (US) - these are results they'll actually see.

      Again, I'm not sure what Google.com (no location) is about. It sounds like not a real thing.
