Hello Warriors,

I am trying to get a link from dmoz , and it's been more than 6 years now , I do everything they say on their guidelines page, but still they haven't added my site, and my site is the top site in the niche.

Is there anyone who can add it for me or any advice ?

Many Thanks .

  • I know there's a backlog of thousands of sites for basically every category. Your only chance of getting into DMOZ is becoming an editor of the category you want to be in.
  • I seen some sites only 3 months old last week that have been added. They were link directories...guess they paid there way in...cause they were crappy sites.
  • If you have submitted the site ONCE, then there is nothing more you can do. Resubmitting will only hurt your chances. Move on and look for links elsewhere. You will either get a link one day or you won't; its just a link - its not worth sweating any time over.
  • You won't get a backlink from DMOZ. They don't accept new sites.. Maybe for more than an year.. Also you could wait for 10+ years and still no success, they CHOOSE which one to approve (websites!)... I am not even sure if it's REALLY free!

    • Yes they do! I have had some sites added recently and so have a lot of others!
  • DMOZ approved website links within 6 months to 1 year.

    • You making that up! Half the sites that get listed were never submitted in the first place and how do you explain all those sites that are not listed after a yr!
  • I have been trying for years myself to get my link into DMOZ however still I seem to fail even now even though I have followed their guidelines step by step. I ended up giving up and finding alternative directories because it just seemed like I was never going to be successful.

    • When you say "trying" what where you doing? If you submitted more than once, then that is a very good reason for not getting listed as its against the guidelines you claimed you were following!
  • Why not just buy an expired domain with dmoz listing and point it to your site? pick em up for $10.

    • That's genius
      How do you find those?

  • I don't now why you would even bother; a DMOZ listing is not worth anything more than what any other link is worth - nothing special.
  • I don't think a DMOZ listing is as valued as it used to be. It is true that it is extremely hard to get into. Don't worry about DMOZ. When checking our status in various "DMOZ Listing Checkers," our website always pops up as listed in DMOZ. When searching DMOZ for our listing, we cannot find it. Don't know, don't care.....(anymore)
  • I am DMOZ editor, and DMOZ is not about design and beauty of your site, but the quality of your site content. If you do not have quality content, it does not matter if your site is 3-4 months or 5 years old. Even if your site does not have a good description and has quality content, editor will edit your description and approve your site (at least that's what I'm doing). In the end, everything depends on editors opinion.

Often problem is that many categories does not have editor, so your website can wait for years to be reviewed.
  • Why bother getting link from Dmoz? It is not going to get you on page one, so better find some other sites from which you can get backlinks similar to Dmoz.

    • Why not? It only takes a couple of minutes to submit as site!
  • Dmoz is too OLD SCHOOL to matter now.
  • True, DMOZ is not important as 2-3 years ago, but still you get very valuable dofollow backlink.
  • Nothing you can do except wait and not focus on it too much. Creating fresh content is far more profitable.
  • Each page on DMOZ is managed by a private person who are responsible for that category. Since they joined DMOZ in 2007 they have worked on it for a few months, added their own page and moved on.

So one category might be managed, while an other have not been logged in to for many years.

You can apply to be an editor, but the person who employ that particular category might not have logged in to DMOZ for years either

It is still only a PR 7 website where your link will get on a low PR page. Every SEO dreams about it, but there are several other PR7, 8 and 9s' where it is much easier to get a link.

Google does not have spesific magic SEO pages in their algo. They look for PR, authority and relevance between the website and page and the page it links to.

    • Try to submit your site in local listing. One question for you.. After how long, do you resubmit your website to dmoz.org?
  • It doesn't matter if you are in DMOZ or not. Its just a link people and to think DMOZ can do some magic to your site is too old school.

  • I know three guys who are editors of categories at DMOZ (well, more like two girls one guy) and two of them joined in early and only add sites that are not competitors to theirs, and this is common practice at DMOZ. The other one I know is very open about being an DMOZ editor and gets some good side money for letting sites through; some of you may know him, he really is that open about it.

Unfortunately, none of them three are in my niches and they told me each editor lives in his own little category world and feel like kings and queens thanks to the unnecesary publicity and prestige DMOZ has. If anything, the Yahoo directory would make more sense in terms of usability since at least regular internet users browse that directory, but DMOZ?? What is this, 1996 or what?

But yeah, if you want to get on DMOZ, you really need to know the editor and do him a good favor, especially in any niches where money is made. They also take their time and hand pick out of the queue,s o if you have been waiting 3 years it doesn't mean you will get reviewed any time soon. If you know an editor you can get inside in less than a month easy.
  • Please dont waste your time trying to get this over hyped link that wont do much for your site anyway.
  • What an absolute load of nonsense!
  • DMoz is best platform for add website but still not an approve any website right now but make sure content is unique so this is benefit.
