Just got back from a #BrightonSEO. I was given room 404 in the hotel I stayed at. Couldn’t find it anywhere!

Might have been worth looking at these types of problems you would face, before you got into the niche.
But remember with links its quality over quantity, stop counting damn links like its a scorecard. The volumes really mean nada. Build good links, keep building them, all will work out just fine in the end.

Ask yourself- can you do better? Sit down, look in the mirror and figure out just how you're better than your competitor. If YOU don't believe that you're better than your competitor, if YOU wouldn't use your product over your competitor's, then nobody else will.

If you do believe you're better, then it's just a matter of persistence and conviction.

That said, if there's someone in your niche with such a heavy headstart, maybe it'll make sense to pick a different niche.

    Cheers,

Hi, Don't think about backlinks to outrank your competitors, Still you could move out with least backlinks to surpass him. Quality is more than quantity. if you'd a good Quality content articles still you can get some awesome backlinks. Try to provide some tiered links with Unique articles, Yeah! It's take some time to write and don't spun otherwise you'll lose rank because i was experienced on losing my Rankings Farewell

With quality work, you can over take your rival as well...

Don't look at the no. of links but look at the quality and natural links..

If you are doing natural link building then it would be helpful to your site and you can win the competition.

Depends how dirty you want to play things.

Negative SEO, mass DMCA take downs, mass submission of spam complaints, posting bad reviews is on the dirtier end of the scale

A few ways that can happen. One way, off the top of my head, is a private blog network where the post title links to the source and the latest posts are shown in the sidebar. That 'latest posts' widget is shown on every page of a site....if it's a well-crawled site it's easy to pick up that many links quickly...and to lose them just as quickly. Multiply that by many sites...and well, that's what you get.

Regardless, as others have already said, the quantity of links doesn't apply here. Dig deep and try to figure out the QUALITY of links you need to beat.

Assuming his links are of high quality, then you should choose another keyword/s?

If his are spammy but a ton of backlinks, then work on creating high quality backlinks... much higher quality than his (eg. very relevant and high PR backlinks)

This forum kills me. And yes, I realize that this post I made will get deleted too.

But seriously, this is an answer?

It's not like OP is giving us anything to work with, all they talk about is how many links competition has which doesn't mean anything If they're all junk links.

Are the links all relevant PR4 links or all irrelevant PRn/a links?

77K links could be the result from a site like FB, a news site, basically anything that produces a lot of shared content.
Question is - CAN you pass the rival with quality content?

Odd, I always thought you beat your competition by selling more. If you establish yourself in the niche and find good quality traffic that actually buys your stuff you will beat your competition.

This is the SEO forum so I'm sure OP is talking about SERP positions, not sales.

Competition could noindex their entire site/pages & make more sales If they have alternative traffic sources.
