I sometimes go and look at the content and backlinks of my competitors who are in front of me in the Serps. I get discouraged when I see sites that have little content and not many backlinks ranking ahead. You just have to scratch your head. There something that google does I guess never get. Guess Ill keep doing my best for myself and my clients.

Hey, you don't always need too many backlinks to rank first. Some people just build couple high PR backlinks and get to page 1 right away. Just don't worry about your competitors, keep building backlinks steadily and don't forget to use advanced methods of link building - guest posting, links from own private network, link wheels, pyramids, link chains etc

This is true but many sites do not have high PR backlinks:confused: to my knowledge using various backlink checkers. Regardless, I try to do all I can to move up as you suggest and hope for the best. Thanks for the info,

Sure. There are many ways to do it but here are the basic way and one that is most effective IMO. First you create high quality backlinks to your site - use high PR sites only. That's your tier 1 links. Then you create backlinks to your tier 1 link. Here you can use lower quality sites. That would be your tier 2. Then you can create backlinks to your tier 2 links, which would be tier 3. And you keep on going like that although making more than 4-5 tiers is useless.

Google is a robot, a very dumb robot that don't make any sense lol. If you going to try figuring it out you will get frustrated, so just stick with the basics - keep creating quality backlinks at the steady pace and I gurantee (like 99% guarantee) you will surpas your competitors that don't have high quality links

Just use what Russerg said. Regardless of what 'google experts' claim, these are the methods which actually work

Doesn't matter how many backlinks you or your compeitiors have, the only thing that matters is, the quality of the backlinks.

1 High Pr backlink from a website in your niche if worth 100 times more then 1000 blog comments.

    Regards,

Not to mention the fact that there are other factors in play, such as the age of the domain.

The Age of the domain doesn't play a big role in terms of ranking sites. It might have small impact, but very very small.

I have managed to outrank site (page actually) that was 7 years old with just high quality backlinks, so it's not a big factor as it might look at first.

All things being equal, the domain age is a ranking factor. Sure you can outrank a 7 year old domain if your on-page SEO and external backlinking profile are superior.

There are a myriad of factors at play. I was just mentioning one of them.

You said you have seen web pages with low content and less backlinks outranking your web page. So be happy, soon you may beat those pages. Or else the tool which gave you idea about the backlink count (more about quality than quantity) might be not so correct. The domain authority also plays a role in keyword ranking. How old , how many pages indexed, how much authoritative, internal linking profile etc also matter.

True to all of this. Like most everybody just confused by some things you see in the serps. I try to adjust to all the google updates and it always seems that alot websites dont have links (without high PR) dont have alot of content and still rank high in serps. Just crazy

Besides backlinks, there are numerous seo factors contributing to search engine rankings, such as domain age, page load time and many more. For instance, WebMeUp checks the following seo factors while analyzes a site in question.

However, if those competitors got their rankings as a result of black hat seo techniques, then their success in SERPs won't last for long. Today seo is drifting to the strategies that will work in the long run: content marketing, contextual links, etc. It actually makes sense to analyze 'legit' seo tactics of your competitors – on-page optimization, social media stats, effective backlink techniques (links from relevant sites, blogs, natural links and so on) and thus find out which best practices you can use to outrank them.
