Use canonical ?

Hello Guy's,
I have one problem that i got lately with a client website.
The client had a website that i did seo.
Now, 3 months ago he bought an EMD, so we decided to do redirect from the old domain to the new domain and to start doing the seo for the new domain.
For the last 3 month the new domain had very good ranking, but now in one week he lost all the ranking (he didnt got hit in any update).
I see with a few other domains that i have that i did redirect that they got down as well.
What is the best way to deal with this now ?
I was thinking to cancel the redirect and to put canonical tag....
Any tips ?
