I Wonder What Authority Means...

I asked many people about the latest seo strategies post penguin and panda, I hear a lot of people speak about authority links, I really wonder what that means, does it mean getting backlinks via guest post (is that an authority?)? Can anyone enlighten me with an example? Will every niche have an authority site? Is it really possible to find an authority site and ask the owner to provide a link back?

I know many people have this thought in their minds...

These are authority links (relevancy + high PR + direct traffic).

    Easy way to build links

Note the thread above won't help you unless you already have decent niche content on your own site/s.

    • Thanks for the tip.

Will the owner of the webmaster agree to give a link back? Won't it be a link farm kind of thing since that particular page contains only OB links? (just curious)

    • lolz. As soon as I read the OP, I thought "Yukon will answer this better than me, best leave it"

      Hey Randy
Finding auth sites in a given niche is quiet easy. Use the google search and have a look at page 1 SERPs for all of your targeted keywords. You will usually see a very clear pattern of certain sites, that pretty much rank highly for everything without having any sort of external inbound linking to the page.

Example say the Health market. You are bound to see a lot of pages from sites like WebMD and Mayoclinic dominate a lot of these SERPs.
Sure enough these sites are not likely to give you guest posting or links very easily, but you get the idea.

As Yukon said, You really need to have your own site looking in tiptop condition before approaching sites for links/posts. But if your site is not quite there yet you could,

Scrape the SERPs listing of X keyword from pages 3-7. And start by approaching those sites first. These guys are probably not making any money in that niche and would be more open to ways to improve their own site with free content. As your site becomes an authority in itself, you can then move up to page 1-2 sites and onwards.

There would generally be an auth site in every niche, but its not a rule. Alot of SERPs are still made up of garbage. But from the garbage Google still has to choose a winner. But that winner doesn't really need to be some PR9 site with 12 million index pages. It just needs to be the boss of its only little place in the world to be the auth site in that niche.

  • I don't think anybody can distinguish what the actual meaning of "authority" is. Typically speaking, authority refers to a site that presents a real user experience, and has established a brand and a following.

Simple Adsense sites which serve no purpose other than to earn money are not authorities. They typically won't offer a great user experience, and they won't build a following.

In short, I guess I would refer to an authority as a site which has NO CHANCE of getting penalized in the future. If you can look at a site, and say, "Wow, this site's great and presents a great user experience", then it's up to to your judgement.
  • Interesting thread guys.

I too am looking into this and have a related questions below.

I have created a website it is very throughly and hopefully appealing and very informative for my niche. I have not created a blog on the site is that important at all? Will it help? Instead what I have been doing is getting articles written about my niche and posting them on articles sites like ezine. Is this going to be effective? Should I add them to my site instead?
Can I use the same articles to then guess post on authority sites or do that have to be different. The keywords are very competitive. Any help that you can provide will be greatly appreciated. Your more than welcome to look at my site if that helps.

    Many Thanks
