Tier 1 Links - Proper Website vs Web 2.0

Hi,

I just wondered what people's thoughts were on having a 5 page website on a web 2.0 platform like wordpress/blogspot vs buying a related brand new domain and hosting the website yourself?

My reason for asking is when analysing competitors websites quite a few that rank well have what seem to be thin sites related to their money site which look to have been setup just for the purpose of the backlink. On top of this, about 3 months ago I setup 2 x web 2.0 sites to point at my money site and also bought a domain, put a couple of articles on that and pointed that at my website and then used the same backlinking methods on both that domain and the web 2.0 sites. Whether this makes a big difference or not but when looking at my backlinks using SEOMoz or Ahref, the web 2.0 sites don't show up but the domain I purchased does.

Obviously there is a slight cost involved in setting it up if you buy the domain but it is pretty small and not really an amount that should make a difference if the results are better that way.

What are people's thoughts?

Thanks,
Dan

    Hey Dan
It's really just a matter of cost Vs control.

Google applies X amount of value to all pages (Not domains) regardless of where they are. All pages are created equally would be the best way to describe it (0 Value). Its up to the page creator to then improve the value with content, backlinks etc etc....

    Pro's and Con's

Own Domain Pro = Complete control over the property.
Own Domain Con = Set up and running costs.

Web2.0 Pro = 0 Set up and running costs.
Web2.0 Con = No control, Can be removed, deleted at any time.

A recent example of no control in Web2.0 would be Squidoo's recent flip to all outbound links set to No-follow.

My advice would be to do both methods and give equal care and attention to all of your Tier1 properties.

Buy aged high pr domains all the time. Web 2.0's hold almost 0 power without a proper tier 2 strategy and they are basically full of OBL parassite links which will drain out your backlink power.
And then of course you have 0 control on it.

Yeah that's great insight if the topic was about aged high pr pages Vs new pages. The OP didn't say anything like that. On a page to page value, all pages are created equally.
The parasite OBL your talking about is really such a small factor its not worth mentoning. As flow is divided by the number of OBL on the page. So all you need to do is dilute the parasite OBL by placing more links of your own. Or simply going into the theme and deleting most of them out. Wordpress has its fair share of such parasites too you know.

My only worry about buying aged domains is the relevancy of the name. I know this doesn't matter as far as the SERPS go but it does for looking obvious to your competitors if they want to report you to Google.

Yeah that's pretty much the key to it. You need to put in the effort when setting up your domains to make them look as legit and unique as your own site. Not built for links looking. I wouldn't get too paranoid about the reporting side of things.

Buying new domains and leaving them there as they are is pretty useless same as for web 2.0's. Get aged domains and start from there.

You can get more than decent domains for 30-50 bucks which are worth far more than 10 new unique domains. You will spend less in yearly manteinance too, hosting and domain renewals.

My opinion is pay for your domain and hosting for your money site. Web 2.0, just use blogger/wordpress/hubspot/etc. Then SEO the hell out of these web 2.0 sites too through social bookmarking and sharing. Of course, your money site needs some other form of backlinks too.

    Hi Dan,
After build web 2.0 properties, you should create tier 2 that point to web 2.0 backlink like social bookmarking, wiki blast.
