Is Adsense dead?

I have read a lot of comments throughout the net that indicates there is no money to be made using adsense now days. What do you think? Is there anyone still making a living using adsense today?

I would love to hear your suggestions and ideas on the topic of adsense if you would care to share with all.

  • The glory days of Adsense are over, true. However, if you want to put in
    the effort, you can make quite a few bucks off of it.

    The biggest problem today is that Google now has different rates for search
    and content sites. So keywords that used to pay a boat load years ago only
    pay a fraction of that now.

    With Adsense, unless you can put together a site that gets mountains of
    traffic each month, you need volume, meaning a lot of sites.

    Personally, it's something I do just to make a few extra bucks, such as
    putting Adsense on my blogs, but I will never use it as a main business
    model.

    Of course that's just my opinion. Others, I am sure, have different
    experiences.

      Well some might disagree !

      The three I mentioned above :
      1. Marcus Frind- $10,000 a day from Adsense on his Site , Plenty of fish.
      2.Grizzly Brears- Averaging over 30k a month with his 7 Butt-Ugly free Blogger Blogs.
      3. Bill Mcintosh- $3.5 million from Adsense in 2008 from a large assortmant of Sites.

      So these guys would beg to differ about it being an effective Model.

      That being said IMHO you would have to be a fool to just have Adsense as your only business model in IM !! Putting all your eggs in one basket is foolhardy !!

      Especially since Google can take your Account away with the blink of an eye.

      But it is still nice to know the potential !!

  • Hehehehehe........Just go ahead and keep thinking that Adsense is Dead . Iam sure Marcus Frind, Grizzly Brears, and Bill Mcintosh will be wholeheartedy in agreement with you........... cough-cough........ as they are quietly exiting the back door and laughing all the way to the Bank !!
  • I use Adsense and do not think it is dead. I'm not making anywhere near what the above people are, but I am happy with my extra cash each month. It is true, you need lots of traffic and a high paying niche to really make killing with it.

      What should be dead, is this myth that you will become a
      millionaire overnight.
      That should die.
      Adsense had become a bandwagon to jump on as a way
      to get rich quick.
      And many people have died.
      But, adsense, as all respectable ways to make money
      online, is alive and well.
      It is a way to make a few bucks, perhaps more, and add
      to your bottom line. That's it. Anyone who comes into
      this and flops something on the web, get's discouraged,
      then tells everyone adsense is dead.

      If you are not making a lot on adsense, cheer up. It
      may take time. I'm in that bunch. If you are making a
      bunch, good for you!

      If you have tried it, gave it a go, and lost your patience,
      bailed, good for you too!

      If you are one who is dying on adsense, it does not mean
      everyone else is or will die also.

      It seems to be quite the rage every so often to take any
      internet marketing subject, put it after the words,
      "The death of...," and make money. And there is nothing
      wrong with that either.

      We just had the NFL draft. 99% will not make it to the NFL.
      Does that mean the draft is dead? Hardly. It got so much news
      coverage it was hard to miss.

      In short, I wish people would take the 'dead' tid bits and
      do what is best for them. I think adsense is a long term
      process, unless you are already dialed in. Very few of those
      out there. But there are plenty who will continue to make
      a few bucks, be happy with that, try for more, and
      continue to grow. Hence, The Warrior Forum!

      There are very famous marketers who are always looking
      and promoting new ways. And one of those is to proclaim
      one of them dead. But after reading many of these, I have
      realized that they do not mean 'dead,' but a different approach.

  • So it appears the general consensus is there is still money to be made with adsense if you apply yourself and address the issues of not becoming too greedy too soon and expecting too much too quickly. I assume if I review the various threads on this board covering the miscellaneous aspects I should be able to generate a reasonable income.
  • Adsense isn't dead. It's actually making living for many people on the Internet.

    To become successful, you need LOTS of decent traffic, unique and original content, use high paying keywords and be active daily of social networking sites like Twitter, Facebook, Orkut, etc.
  • Are there still people making a living? Yes. Don't listen to the people that say Adsense is dead, people have been saying this for years ( mainly as a marketing angle to promote CPA/Affiliate programs/products etc ) and it's very much alive.

  • You might have noticed over the past few weeks that in some forums and between some e-book writers that there is debate over whether Ad Sense is everything it's cracked up to be. Some are saying that it's dead, others are saying it's dead if you use it for Arbitrage and others are saying it's the best thing since sliced bread.
  • Adsense is definitely not dead, it has just become harder now to game Adsense system. Like I read some where it is time to evolve.

    • Yep, there is no need to try to Game Adsense to be successful. You can do it the correct way with solid and informative content and good SEO... It just takes some time and patience.
      Unfortunately, many newbies do not possess this particular virtue !!

  • Not dead, yet anyway. As sad as it is, it's still one of the best forms of income for a content site. But that's what it is designed for - CONTENT sites. As in lots of content = traffice = money. It's not the ONLY form of income you should have, but for sites that really don't make a lot of people buy stuff, it's great. My favorite part about it is it's a passive income, meaning I don't have to do anything once the site is pulling in clicks. Affiliate programs are good too, but you really have to pre-sell your visitors before they buy. With some niches that works, but not all. (Ever tried to sell stuff on recipes pages? It doesn't work, but they love to click!)

    So no, not dead. I do expect some changes soon what with the junk sites taking over though. They are killing it right now, but don't think Google isn't noticing.

    It'll make money if you have massive traffic with good content.
  • Steven is right. I would go further and say Adsense and advertising in general are crappy business models.

    You are spending time and money to send tons of people to your websites. Then you're spending time and effort to send them away from your site(click the ads). There's no effort to build relationships, a solid business over the long term. It destroys your brand and makes your website look like crap.

    If you want to make money I'd look elsewhere. Affiliates, your own products. It's difficult to do worse than adsense.

  • I am a full-time Internet marketer. I am successful in that IM is my only source of income and I make a pretty decent living.

    Approximately 40% of my revenue comes from Adsense.

    My Adsense sites are pretty thoroughly optimized for Adsense:

    They are content-rich minisites and blogs.
    They are in niches that pay $1-$2 per click.
    The layout and Adsense format have been tested and optimized for maximum CTR.
    They follow Google's TOS.

    The only thing about Adsense that's dead are the PPC-to-Adsense arbitrage days and junk MFA sites. However if you're simply slapping adblocks into a site with marginal traffic, not optimized in terms of ad format and placement, and in low-paying niches, you shouldn't expect too much.

  • I make a few dollars from adsense but I sure don't rely upon it. Finding the right niche is the key to getting those clicks. I'm still working on that.
  • internetmarketer99 could you give me some ideas on what you mean by MFA junk sites.....I understand they are made for adsense and may have a bit of junk in them....can they be modified and the content improved to meet googles requirements?

    • Personally, to me a junk Site is one that has totally Duplicate Material and it is NOT updated at all with maybe a few Articles in the whole Site. And has big Adsense Blocks posted at the top where it is obvious this all the Owner cares about is someone clicking on these Blocks.
      IMHO,you got to have at least a few Dozen Posts of original Content.
      At the very least give Author Credit with a Backlink if you are going to an Article Directory to get your Posts !!
  • adsense is not dead and it can't be. google makes lots of money from it and do you think they will jettsion it. no. I think we need to face the fact that it requires a lot fo work and time to join the adsense milionaires. if we can do that, then we will realize that adsense is not dead. and also, it is not good to fear that your adsense account will be diasbled by the big "G" anytime. you don't have to entertain that fear if you follow their coniditons strictly. can you lose your job if you don't go against your comopany's regulations? it is only during a downturn that such things happen. keep doing the work and you will earn more and attest to it that adsense is not dead.
  • One thing that's very apparent in this thread is that both sides of the coin generate a lot of passion and emotion. Anywhere that creates such a high level of interest is an indicator that something is still going strong. It's when you post a thread like that and nobody replies that you have your answer

  • They definitely aren't dead, and they are still paying top dollar for certain keywords...at least to certain companies.

    I have a few established domains parked with a particular service that uses Google for their ads...got 11 bucks for 1 click last month. My average 'per click' last week was 3 bucks per. (and this was MY cut....after the Google and the domain parking service took theirs)

    And this wasn't for something like mesothelioma or insurance stuff...this was based on a 'online home business' domain.

    I think they've just dropped their payouts significantly on their content network to the 'average joe' to try to deal with all of the fraud. In a way, you can't blame 'em.

    • I agree. Google's most income is based on the Google Ads. So it can't just stop adsense services for the Google users.

      The thing is that, it is becoming very difficult to make money through Google adsense because of numerous restrictions posed by Google.

    • Yep, same here. Back last Summer I swore to myself that no one could earn peanuts with Adsense. It just took a little research and observing to realize you can in fact earn some decent money with it !!
  • I believe affiliates will always dominate the lower class men with low traffic because it is just more easier to profit and to convert into sales. Adsense will most likely be the main monetizing source for high traffic end sites.

  • Steve Crooks - You are very right. A lot of the people that are proclaiming 'Adsense dead' are the ones looking for a marketing angle or unfortunately doing things wrong ( often not realising this to be the case ).

    • So far I have not been doing so well with Adsense and still have not made payout yet and it has been several months!! I'm at $96 dollars now but I do not rely on Adsense to make income online.

    I am curious as to how much of your income is from adsense. I have read your posting on trying to make $100 per day with a new site and using none of your other lines to bolster it. I have gotten many ideas from that posting and see where it could become a very profitable line if done right.

    • Overall, my income is spread between a number of different models and Adsense contributes around 20% of that income at the moment.

    You just to need change yourself with the google adsense and for that you will have to find out the changes.

    • With due respect to everyone who informed you that Adsense is dead, I believe that myth of death of Adsense is nonsense.

      I shall give a simple but clear logic. Let us start from one question to understand whether Adsense is dead - Is Google dead?

      No. Of course no. Google is alive, and is still one of the biggest companies making web revenue.

      Where does Google make the revenue from? From Adwords - more than 90% or so.

      Where are Adwords ads displayed? Of course not only on Google search results. On hundreds of thousands of sites.

      Why would you display third party ads over your great site and wonderful content? To gain something beyond beauty. In other words, to gain money.

      Now tell me, with the number of websites going up and up everyday, and statistics still saying that less than 1% (actualy aruond 0.5%) websites sell anything, and Google Adwords being mega-miles ahead of any other PPC, what is your belief?

  • I see that adsense is not dead and in fact may still be growing. How many of the people here are making a reasonable income from adsense? I know that Steve Crooks is and has shared on another thread how he is doing it. Does anyone else have any unique ideas or ways they are using the program to generate a decent income. I don't want it to be the only income source I have but would love for it to be a supplemental line of income.
  • To be successful in AdSense is doing EXACTLY what Steve Crooks says. Spend the time, grow it, it will treat you right. It's not an overnight millionaire maker but it can be a steady stream of income.

    • I still have faith in Adsense. Though I saw my $$ per click reduced greatly a couple of years ago, there are still niches that pay very well. If you plan for adsense to bring in your money, you need to be involved in more than one niche and you must do your research. I have one niche that gets tons of traffic but the $ per click is .10 or less for most clicks. It takes a long time to make money on that niche. However, I have another niche that gets 1-2 bucks per click. You need to find the right niche to make good money with adsense. It is always best to also promote products with review pages.

      I prefer to Buy a product, try it out and then write a review. Sometimes you have to be careful, if your review is going to be negitive you may want to contact the company first to give them a chance to provide their side of the story.
  • It was easier to make money with adsense back when it started but I think that was because advertisers didn't know what they were doing and were just throwing money at adwords. These days in order to run a profitable campaign advertisers need to tweak their campaigns constantly and adjust how much they are willing to pay for the search traffic and the content network traffic. Their bids on each can vary hugely.

    In addition to that, visitors have become better at identifying adsense ads, sometimes causing them to avoid clicking on them. I have personally seen my CTR decline steadily over the last few years. Having said that, adsense is by no means dead and still consistently makes up a substantial part of my income each month. In fact since starting in late 2004 I haven't had a single day without earning something from adsense, unfortunately I can't say the same for my sites that bring in affiliate sales.
