Do people link to your pages?

How often do people actually link to a page naturally? I occasionally get people to link to a page but damn if its rare. The content is great, good enough to get some education sites to link to some pages, but there always nofollow so it doesn’t help much. I also try and write content that is on a viral level but even that doesn’t seem to work much. Crap, I got to write a totally crazy false story to get links or go viral?!? Is there something that I’m missing? Is the "post it and they will come" a myth? This is just frustrating! I don't normally add pictures or videos, is this necessary?

I do get traffic, just few who link to me.

    Yes they do...

    Here's my strategy for getting tonloads of "natural" links.

    1) Find deleted content or out to date content that is related to my niche.
    2) Improve this "old" content x2 and publish it on my page
    3) Contact webmasters who have linked to this broken page and tell them that I have new & improved one
    4) If they like it, they will tweet it
    5) If people tweet it, you will get natural links as well

    If you have large list of followers then it's even more easier.

    P.S: You don't have to do this broken linkbuilding or content improving to get natural links. You can also come up with something that is unique, interesting and something that YOU would share with your friends and followers. If you can make this kind of content, find persons who enjoy that = it can go viral and you can get natural links for sure.

    The first backlinks you should build yourself... It doesn't happen very often when you have a new website and people just link to it... For example you can do guest blogging, article marketing and a few link exchanges and other people (a few!) could link to your website if they think your website is USEFUL and INFORMATIVE!
