Domain name selection

I am wanting to purchase a domain name for a new niche of mine but unsure if the keyword is too competitive.

The keyword is "medium" competition on google adwords and gets 18k searches per month which seems penetrable but when searching for those exact keywords on google I get over 270k.

Can I assume that ranking for this would require a lot of work, content, backlinks, authority etc?

If you find EMD in .com extension then you would rank in short period of time as well, with the help of only content creation...

In past those EMD sites were penalized which were of low quality.

Well if the EMD is open you can take that, but try to figure out what you will do with the site.

Will it just be a small MFA site or will you turn it into a bigger site.

If the EMD is not to long i would say go for that. Being able to rank fast is hard to say, but a good idea would be to make 1 article or day 300-700 words long and just focus on the long tail keywords with around 100 searches a month, after a while you are targeting alot of keywords and your site will gain some natural backlinks from people sharing your content.

From my previous experience i would say with this strategy and a medium keyword you will be able to rank top 5 within a year + you have almost 400 articles, so you will probably also get around 300-500 visitors a day from just long tail searches.

Which means very little in terms of being able to rank for that keyword.

Broad or exact match? Makes a HUGE difference.

Doing a search for the keywords and looking at the number of results is a very poor method to estimating the competition. You really should be just looking at the strength of the top 5-10 sites.
